Guardiola Emphasizes Perspective as City Fight for Champions League Spot
Pep Guardiola has defended Manchester City’s season, insisting that competing for a top-four finish in the Premier League is not a failure — and used the moment to aim a subtle dig at rivals Manchester United.

Speaking ahead of City's upcoming clash with Everton, Guardiola addressed the pressure surrounding the run-in and City's battle to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

City, who have dominated English football over the past half-decade, currently find themselves outside the title picture after a difficult winter period and injury setbacks to key players. Despite those challenges, Guardiola remains focused on securing a strong finish.

Guardiola: "It Could Be Worse"
The Catalan manager acknowledged that while City’s campaign hasn’t hit the heights of previous seasons, they are still in a position many clubs would envy.

"I don't think it's a bad thing to be fighting to qualify for the Champions League," Guardiola said during Friday’s press conference.

"You could be in a very low position in the Premier League if you have done fewer good things than we have done in these four, five months.

We could be 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th."

While he didn’t name Manchester United directly, the reference was clear. Ruben Amorim's side — who currently sit in 14th place — are enduring one of the club's worst seasons in Premier League history.

United's Ongoing Struggles Under Amorim
Manchester United’s 2024/25 campaign has been riddled with inconsistency. After replacing Erik ten Hag in November, Amorim was brought in to stabilize a sinking ship. While there have been occasional signs of improvement, United remain mathematically out of contention for Champions League qualification through the league.

Their inconsistent league form has left them far adrift of the top four, and with just six games remaining, domestic salvation appears unlikely.

Europa League Provides United's Only Route to UCL
Despite their Premier League struggles, United’s Europa League campaign has provided a rare bright spot.

Their dramatic quarter-final victory over Lyon has propelled them into the semi-finals, leaving them just two wins away from securing the trophy — and a place in next season’s expanded Champions League group phase.

Winning the Europa League would not only redeem their season but also deliver a significant financial boost. Entry into the Champions League is estimated to be worth over £85 million, factoring in broadcasting revenue, UEFA bonuses, and matchday earnings.

What It All Means
Guardiola’s comments may come across as self-defensive, but they reflect the shifting standards at Manchester City — a club for whom finishing top four is now the minimum expectation.

In contrast, Manchester United's season underlines how quickly fortunes can change in elite football.
With City fighting to maintain their Champions League status and United clinging to Europa League hopes, the closing weeks of the season could prove decisive for both clubs — on and off the pitch.
