Pascal Groß is reportedly on the verge of returning to Brighton & Hove Albion, with the midfielder expected to travel to England imminently to complete a medical ahead of a January move.

The 34-year-old left Brighton in August 2024 to join Borussia Dortmund, ending a seven-year spell on the south coast. However, the move has not unfolded as hoped, with Groß struggling to secure a regular role under Niko Kovač during the first half of the season.

Groß set for Brighton return after Dortmund struggles

Groß has featured in 16 matches for Borussia Dortmund this season but has accumulated just 732 minutes across all competitions, highlighting his reduced status in the squad. That lack of involvement has reportedly led to growing frustration, prompting his representatives to explore options for a January exit.

According to Bild, Brighton have moved quickly once the opportunity arose and are now “on the verge” of completing a deal to bring the midfielder back to the Premier League. Talks between the clubs are said to be at an advanced stage, with agreements already in place.

Medical expected as deal nears completion

Sky Deutschland, as cited by Bild, reports that Borussia Dortmund will receive around €3 million for Groß, a figure viewed internally as a sensible outcome given his contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

The move is expected to be finalised shortly, with Groß travelling to England to undergo a Brighton medical within the next two days. Ruhr Nachrichten adds that Dortmund are heading to Marbella for a winter training camp, but Groß is likely to be left out of the travelling squad due to his imminent departure.

The local outlet reports that once the medical is successfully completed, Groß will sign his contract immediately and will no longer be part of Dortmund’s plans.

Familiar face for Brighton squad

A return to Brighton would see Groß rejoin a club where he remains a hugely respected figure, having been central to their rise in the Premier League across multiple seasons. While his role would need to be carefully managed at this stage of his career, Brighton view his experience, versatility and leadership as valuable assets for the second half of the campaign.

However, until the medical is completed and contracts are signed, the move remains subject to final confirmation.

What’s next

Groß is expected to travel to England shortly to complete his medical. If all goes to plan, Brighton will announce the signing soon after, while Borussia Dortmund will finalise their winter squad plans without the midfielder ahead of their training camp.

Would bringing Pascal Groß back be a smart short-term move for Brighton — or should the club focus solely on younger reinforcements in January?
