Omar Alderete Sunderland bargain story is quickly becoming one of the talking points of the Premier League season. Signed from Getafe for just €12m, the Paraguayan defender has slotted seamlessly into Régis Le Bris’ side and is now being hailed as one of the bargains of the summer window.

Spanish outlet AS reports that Alderete has “exceeded all expectations” since his move, with his performances leading Sunderland up to 5th in the table. The centre-back was even named in the Premier League’s team of the week, becoming only the second Paraguayan ever to achieve that distinction. For a player scorned in Spain and underappreciated at Getafe, his rise in England is all the more impressive.

Alderete’s rise to idol status at Sunderland

The 28-year-old has instantly become a fan favourite at the Stadium of Light. AS claim he is already “an absolute idol” among supporters, both for his defensive solidity and for his leadership in a young squad. They add that the Premier League “is amazed” by his level, noting his combination of aggression, composure on the ball, and dominance in the air.

Few predicted such a strong debut season for Alderete, but his rapid adaptation is a testament to Sunderland’s scouting and to Le Bris’ coaching. Having been labelled “underrated” in La Liga, he is now one of the sensations of the English top flight.

Alderete’s Sunderland stats so far

Stat (2025/26) Omar Alderete

These numbers underline just how effective Alderete has been in Sunderland’s backline. Averaging nearly six clearances a match and contributing 1.7 interceptions, he has provided both defensive steel and composure. His low figure of being dribbled past (0.3 per game) reflects how difficult he is to beat one-on-one, while his 3.5 recoveries highlight his anticipation and reading of the game. Add in a goal across his six appearances, and it’s easy to see why he is already idolised at the Stadium of Light.

Analyst verdict

FootballPlace analyst John William noted: “For just €12m, Alderete may prove to be one of the smartest deals of the Premier League summer. Sunderland needed experience and leadership at the back, and he’s delivered both while raising the level of those around him.”

He added: “It’s a reminder of how undervalued some players can be in Spain, and how the Premier League’s pace and physicality actually suits their game better. Alderete has given Sunderland a defensive platform to dream about European qualification.”

What’s next for Sunderland and Alderete?

Long term, Sunderland’s hopes of European qualification could hinge on Alderete maintaining this level. For a club aiming to cement itself back among England’s elite, finding a player of his quality at such a modest price may be transformative.

I dont think Sesko, Cunha or even Cantona will do anything with Amorim against Sunderland. I even predict Sunderland to win at Old Trafford.
