Ollie Watkins Proves His Point After Heated Talks with Unai Emery
Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins delivered a sensational performance in his team’s 4-1 win over Newcastle United, just days after opening up about his frustration at being benched in the Champions League.

The England international was the driving force behind Villa’s dominant showing at Villa Park, scoring within the first 33 seconds and later assisting Ian Maatsen’s goal. Watkins was a constant threat, hitting the woodwork twice and proving to be a nightmare for defenders Fabian Schar and Dan Burn.
But the road to that standout performance wasn’t smooth.

The Frustration Behind the Scenes
Watkins was left out of the starting eleven in Aston Villa’s dramatic 3-2 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final second leg. Despite his vital role in getting the team that far, he only featured for the final 15 minutes of the match, with manager Unai Emery opting to start Marcus Rashford instead.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Watkins admitted his anger:
"I played 20 minutes against PSG in both games. I’m not going to lie, I was fuming that I wasn't playing — I let him know that."

He continued:
"You have to respect the manager's decision, but I’m not the type of player happy to sit on the bench. Missing out on the biggest stage was hard to take. I’ve played a huge part in getting us there and wanted to contribute more."

Emery’s Response: Encouraging Passion
Unai Emery is renowned for his man-management, especially when dealing with squad rotation frustrations. Watkins isn’t the first — the likes of Jhon Duran and Youri Tielemans have also expressed discontent in the past.|

Emery didn’t take Watkins’ emotional response as a problem. In fact, he welcomed it.
“It’s fantastic to be angry, it’s fantastic to play like he did today,” Emery said after the Newcastle match. “That’s the level of commitment I want.”

Emery highlighted Watkins’ professionalism and the quality of their conversation:
“He’s always respectful and committed — to the club, his teammates, and the coaches. I try to support every player while also being demanding. With Watkins, our conversation was a very good one. His response on the pitch was outstanding.”

Watkins had only started one of the six matches before the Newcastle clash, with Emery often preferring Rashford up front. For a player used to being Villa’s focal point, that was uncharted territory.
But Emery believes Watkins' reaction reflects elite mentality:
“When players respond like that, it’s fantastic — for them, for the team, and for our goals.”

Ollie Watkins delivered a statement performance during Aston Villa’s dominant 4-1 win over Newcastle United on April 19. After a week of headlines surrounding his limited minutes against PSG, the striker responded in the best possible way — by leading from the front with energy, creativity, and precision.

His individual stats from the match highlight just how influential he was across all areas of the pitch:

Stat Value
Goals 1
Assists 1
Shots on target 3
Shots hit woodwork 2
Minutes played 90
Key passes 2

Was this the response of a top-level striker proving a point — or more a reflection of Newcastle’s defensive struggles?

It’s time for Watkins to leave. The manager doesn’t rate him and when things like this happen, it’s more like the end.
