Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has admitted the club could be forced into selling captain Marc Guéhi this month if a sufficiently large offer arrives, with January interest continuing to build from across Europe.

Guéhi is out of contract in the summer and has already come close to leaving Selhurst Park once this season. A move to Liverpool collapsed late in September after Palace were unable to secure a replacement, but interest has not gone away.

“There will be a threshold”

Speaking candidly ahead of the January transfer window, Glasner acknowledged the financial reality facing Palace when a player is entering the final months of his deal.

“There’s the situation that the contract ends in the summer,” Glasner said. “If somebody is coming, there will be a moment when the club says: ‘Now the financial issue is more important than the sport issue’.

“We have to do it and try to get the best. That’s why I’m always saying: ‘I don’t know.’ Because this is different.”

Glasner made clear that Palace’s stance would depend on two key factors: Guéhi’s wishes and the size of the bid.

“There will be a threshold where the club has to say [sell]… if the player says: ‘I want to leave’ and the money is above the threshold, it will happen.”

Manchester City interest acknowledged

Alongside Liverpool, Manchester City are now strongly linked with a January approach. Although Pep Guardiola played down the likelihood of significant spending this month, Glasner conceded that a major offer from the Etihad would be difficult to resist.

“I’m not so naive not to know that if a massive offer comes from City and Marc wants to do it, it will happen,” he admitted.

Guéhi has also attracted interest from other European clubs monitoring his contract situation, with the prospect of a free transfer in the summer adding further pressure on Palace’s decision-making.

A softer tone — but no guarantees

Despite the frank admission, Glasner later struck a more cautious note, stressing the unpredictability of the transfer window and refusing to commit publicly to any outcome.

“Tomorrow starts the next crazy month in football,” he said last week. “The next 31 days — everything is possible, like always. Everything I say today might be wrong in two days.

“That’s why the best thing is say nothing. I don’t know what will happen with Marc. I don’t know what will happen with new players.”

The Palace boss even broadened his uncertainty to other key figures, including Jean-Philippe Mateta, underlining how fluid the situation remains.

Palace facing a familiar dilemma

Having followed Palace’s recent windows closely, this is a scenario the club know well: risk losing a key player for nothing in the summer, or accept a January sale that weakens the squad but protects long-term finances.

Guéhi’s importance as captain and defensive leader makes the decision particularly delicate, especially with relegation battles often tightening after Christmas. However, contract realities may ultimately dictate the outcome.

Key insights

  • Marc Guéhi is out of contract in summer 2026
  • Liverpool and Manchester City remain interested
  • Glasner admits a “threshold” exists for a sale
  • Player preference will influence any decision
  • January window described as unpredictable

What’s next?

Much will hinge on whether a concrete bid arrives — and how close it comes to Palace’s internal valuation. If Manchester City or Liverpool move decisively, Palace may have little choice but to act quickly to avoid losing Guéhi for free later this year.

Should Crystal Palace cash in now — or gamble on keeping Guéhi until the summer?
