Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has formally confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season, bringing clarity to months of speculation surrounding his future.
The Austrian coach is out of contract in June and has now revealed that he informed Palace chairman Steve Parish of his decision as far back as October. Glasner made it clear he would not be signing a new deal, with both parties agreeing to keep the matter private until now.
Decision made months ago
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Glasner explained the timeline behind his choice.
“A decision has already been taken, months ago,” he said. “I had a meeting with Steve in October, the international break. We had a very long talk, and I told him I will not sign a new contract.
“We agreed at the time it was best to keep it between us. It was the best we could do to keep it confidential for three months. But now it’s important to have clarity.”
Glasner stressed that the delay in going public was down to Palace’s congested schedule rather than uncertainty.
“We had a very busy schedule so that’s why we didn’t want to talk about it. Steve and I want the best for Crystal Palace.”
Seeking a new challenge
The 50-year-old, who guided Palace to their first major trophy last season with a stunning FA Cup final win over Manchester City, insisted his decision was not linked to transfers or internal issues.
“I told Steve I’m looking for a new challenge,” Glasner said. “It’s my feeling after everything. I told him in October it’s nothing to do with the transfer window.
“I hate if something is written that is not true — it’s tough for me to respond. We have a great relationship and always talk about what’s best for Palace.”
That FA Cup triumph also secured Palace’s first-ever qualification for European football, cementing Glasner’s place in the club’s history.
United links played down
Glasner has been linked with the Manchester United job, with the Old Trafford club expected to appoint a new permanent manager in the summer following Michael Carrick’s interim spell.
However, the Palace boss dismissed suggestions he has already held discussions about his next move.
“I haven’t spoken to any other club,” he said. “I told the players, promised them, I will give my best to get the points record.
“We will do everything to bring another trophy back to Selhurst Park.”
One final push at Selhurst Park
Despite confirming his departure, Glasner made it clear his focus remains firmly on finishing the season strongly.
“We will do our best,” he added. “For the players alone it’s tough, but together it’s possible. I will do everything to bring another trophy to Selhurst and play the best Premier League season ever.”
With clarity now provided, Palace can begin planning for life after Glasner, while the manager himself looks to sign off with further success before moving on.
