Oliver Glasner has played down speculation surrounding his Crystal Palace future after speaking to German media following Sunday’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Crystal Palace head coach has just over six months remaining on his current contract, with no extension agreed as yet. Palace were beaten 1-0 at Selhurst Park by Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, a result that once again brought Glasner’s long-term position into focus.
After the match, the Austrian spoke to Sky Deutschland reporter Dirk Schlarmann, with the comments later relayed by journalist Florian Plettenberg. When asked directly about his contract situation and the possibility of leaving Palace, Glasner was keen to steer the conversation away from the summer.
“In four days, we’re playing Fulham here,” Glasner said. “We have matches on the [January] 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th — four games in nine days. That’s why summer feels very far away for me, not just because of the temperatures, but because the daily schedule simply leaves no time to think about it.”
Palace success has raised outside interest
Glasner’s future has been a recurring topic since his remarkable first full season in England. The 51-year-old guided Palace to their first major trophy last term by lifting the FA Cup, before adding further silverware with a Community Shield win over Liverpool.
Those achievements significantly raised Glasner’s profile, both domestically and abroad. In August, he spoke openly about his affection for Palace, while on 9 December he confirmed he was “always in discussions internally” when questioned about a potential renewal.
Despite that, reports in recent weeks have suggested Glasner may have decided against extending his stay at Selhurst Park beyond the end of the campaign.
Tottenham links continue to surface
On Sunday, Austrian journalist Peter Linden suggested that while a Palace stay beyond this season could not be ruled out, Tottenham Hotspur were the most likely next destination should Glasner move on.
Those claims have added fuel to speculation, particularly with Spurs’ own managerial situation continuing to attract scrutiny. However, Glasner’s latest comments indicate that any decision on his future is firmly on hold.
Focus remains on the short term
For now, Glasner appears determined to keep attention on Palace’s immediate schedule rather than contract talks. A busy festive and New Year period lies ahead, with matches coming thick and fast and little room for long-term planning.
Having followed Palace closely this season, the sense internally remains that clarity will come later rather than sooner. Much will depend on results in the coming months and whether both parties feel aligned heading into the final stretch of the campaign.
What’s next?
Crystal Palace return to action at Selhurst Park against Fulham in three days, before embarking on a demanding run of four matches in nine days across early January. Any meaningful discussions over Glasner’s future are unlikely to take place until that schedule eases.
Should Crystal Palace push now to secure Glasner’s future, or wait until the season’s direction becomes clearer
