Nicolás Domínguez believes Nottingham Forest can still rescue their season — and knows that doing so could be crucial to keeping his World Cup dream alive.
The Argentine midfielder was on the scoresheet this week as Forest picked up a valuable result against West Ham, marking his first goal of the campaign and underlining his growing importance under Sean Dyche.
Domínguez growing into key Forest role
After struggling for consistent minutes earlier in the season, Nicolás Domínguez has become a regular feature since Sean Dyche took charge.
Dyche has used Domínguez both in midfield and out wide, leaning heavily on the versatility that made the Argentine such a valuable asset during his time in Italy. That adaptability has allowed him to carve out a defined role during a turbulent period for the club.
His recent goal against West Ham United may prove a turning point — both personally and collectively.
“We can save ourselves”
Speaking to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Domínguez addressed Forest’s struggles and the challenge of adapting to the Premier League.
“It’s difficult to explain, but we all know that the Premier League is a very difficult championship,” he said.
“Every game here is tough. There have been a couple of changes in the last four or five months, but the important thing is that the group is united. We can save ourselves.”
That belief reflects Dyche’s emphasis on unity and resilience — qualities Forest will need if they are to pull clear of danger in the second half of the season.
World Cup ambition driving him on
Despite Forest’s position, Domínguez remains clear about his long-term ambition: representing Argentina at the World Cup.
“It’s definitely a goal,” the 27-year-old admitted.
“But I’m focused on doing well here because that’s what gets you there. Going to the World Cup is definitely part of my goals. But I have to do well here first.”
For Forest, that individual motivation could be invaluable. A player pushing for international recognition often brings intensity and consistency — exactly what Dyche’s side need.
Proving his value after bargain deal
Domínguez’s influence is becoming harder to ignore. Signed for around €8m as part of a swap deal involving Remo Freuler, he is now beginning to justify that investment.
His comfort across multiple positions mirrors the role he previously played at Bologna, and his growing stature suggests Forest are finally seeing the best of him.

For both player and club, the objectives are aligned: climb the table, stabilise performances, and keep belief alive.
