Nico Elvedi has broken his silence on the collapsed Wolves transfer — admitting he was “disappointed” not to join the Premier League side in 2023.

The Borussia Mönchengladbach defender had been a top target for Wolves, with reports claiming he had even started house hunting in England after agreeing terms.

But the move never materialised. Speaking to BILD this week as he marked a decade at Gladbach, Elvedi opened up on the saga for the first time.

“Sure, I was disappointed at first. But today I can say: ten years at Borussia! That’s quite an impressive number.”

The Swiss international has made 328 appearances since arriving from FC Zürich in 2015 and is now one of the club’s longest-serving players.

Why the Move to Wolves Collapsed

In the summer of 2023, Elvedi had just one year left on his deal. Wolves were keen to secure a cut-price deal, but Gladbach stood firm.

The Bundesliga side had already lost Marcus Thuram and Ramy Bensebaini on free transfers — and were determined not to repeat the mistake.

Elvedi was briefly sidelined from first-team action as contract talks stalled. Eventually, he agreed an extension, and now looks set to remain in Germany until at least 2027.

“It wasn’t easy, but I could actually understand it,” Elvedi said.
“The club didn’t want to let another key player go for free.”

Analyst Verdict

For Wolves, Elvedi would have been a shrewd signing — a versatile, experienced centre-back with Champions League pedigree. His composure and aerial ability were exactly what the club lacked under Julen Lopetegui at the time. But with Wolves opting not to return in 2024 or 2025, that door now looks firmly closed.

Key Insights

  • Elvedi had agreed terms with Wolves in 2023 — but the deal collapsed.
  • The defender was even house hunting in England before the move broke down.
  • He later extended his Borussia Mönchengladbach contract to 2027.
  • Elvedi has now made 328 appearances in ten years at the club.
  • Wolves never revived their interest — despite their defensive needs.

What’s Next for Elvedi?

Still just 28, the Switzerland international could yet secure a Premier League move before the 2026 World Cup — but for now, he seems happy to lead Gladbach into a new era.

Should Wolves have pushed harder for Elvedi in 2023 — or did they dodge a bullet?
