Leeds United have yet to submit an official offer for Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi, despite reports suggesting Daniel Farke's side are prepared to pay around €8.5 million for the experienced centre-back.
According to Rheinische Post, Borussia Monchengladbach remain in complete control of the situation and have not received any concrete approach from Leeds or any other club for the Switzerland international.
With Elvedi currently focused on Switzerland's World Cup campaign, a decision over his future is unlikely to arrive until after the tournament.
Leeds United interest remains at an early stage
Reports earlier this week suggested Leeds were willing to offer €8.5 million to bring Elvedi to Elland Road this summer.
However, Rheinische Post states that no official bid has been lodged, meaning Borussia Monchengladbach have had no reason to open negotiations.
The 29-year-old remains one of the Bundesliga club's most important players after another outstanding campaign. Elvedi featured in 33 league matches last season, missing just one through suspension, and accumulated more minutes than any other player in the squad.
That consistency has only strengthened Gladbach's determination to maximise any potential transfer fee.
Borussia Monchengladbach hold strong negotiating position
Borussia's position has improved further after a clause in Elvedi's contract expired, leaving the German club free to negotiate any transfer fee they believe reflects his value.
According to the report, sporting director Rouven Schröder would only consider offers worth well into eight figures, significantly above the €8.5 million figure linked with Leeds.
Although Borussia are willing to listen to offers, they do not consider Elvedi a player they need to sell this summer. Instead, the club are preparing to offer the defender a new contract as they attempt to keep one of their defensive leaders beyond his current deal, which runs until 2027.
Key Points
- Leeds United have not submitted an official bid for Nico Elvedi.
- Borussia Monchengladbach want a fee in excess of €10 million.
- Elvedi's contract runs until 2027 after a previous clause expired.
- The defender is focused on Switzerland's World Cup campaign.
- Borussia are also hoping to persuade him to sign a new contract.
What's next?
Elvedi is expected to postpone any decision on his club future until Switzerland's World Cup campaign comes to an end. Borussia Monchengladbach remain hopeful of extending his contract, while Leeds United could decide whether to increase their interest with a formal offer later in the transfer window. Much will depend on whether the Premier League club are prepared to meet Borussia's reported valuation.
Do Leeds United need to meet Borussia Monchengladbach's asking price, or should they pursue alternative defensive targets this summer?
