Former West Ham transfer chief Tim Steidten has launched a fresh defence of the club’s controversial €27m move for striker Niclas Füllkrug.

The ex-Borussia Dortmund star was brought in during the summer of 2024 but has struggled for fitness and form — scoring just three goals in 20 appearances. Despite this, Steidten insists he underpaid for the 32-year-old and says the forward still has what it takes to shine in the Premier League.

Füllkrug’s Struggles Fuel Criticism – But Steidten Won’t Budge

Signed after a standout season in which he helped Dortmund reach the Champions League final, Füllkrug was meant to bring leadership and goals to the London Stadium. But injury setbacks and inconsistency left fans and pundits questioning both the price tag and the logic behind the move.

However, Steidten remains firm in his belief.

“In the end, we were at a fee of €22m with Dortmund, and I would do the transfer again at any time. Dortmund said he had been too expensive — for me, he was still too cheap.” — Tim Steidten

He added that Füllkrug remains in peak physical shape and offers off-pitch value as well:

“Niclas was not only the type of player I was looking for on the pitch, but also someone who can lead the team off the pitch.” — Tim Steidten

Füllkrug’s West Ham Stats So Far

Stat Value
Appearances (All Competitions) 20
Goals 3
Assists 2
Minutes Played 1,008
Injury Absences 3 separate spells

Analyst Verdict

While Füllkrug’s output fell short, Steidten’s defence reveals how much West Ham valued his leadership and experience. But in a results-driven league, sentiment must match performance — and next season may be his last chance to prove it.

  • Steidten claims €22m fee for Füllkrug was a bargain
  • Striker’s return: 3 goals and 2 assists in 20 games
  • Injuries derailed his impact in debut PL season
  • Dortmund considered him overpriced — Steidten disagrees

What's Next?

West Ham face a crucial call this summer: back Füllkrug for a second season, or cut their losses and target a younger striker profile. A decision is expected before the end of July.

Was Füllkrug overpriced — or just unlucky with injuries?
