Niclas Füllkrug poised for a strong return at West Ham next season

West Ham United supporters may feel a sense of frustration regarding Niclas Füllkrug's first season at the club, as the striker’s fitness issues have limited his impact. The £27 million signing from last summer was expected to make a big impression in the Premier League, but injuries have kept him sidelined for much of the campaign.

Though Füllkrug has been involved in some notable moments when on the pitch, scoring in three of the four games he played for West Ham or Germany when given more than 68 minutes, his time on the field has been disappointingly short. The fact that those performances were spread across just four games speaks volumes about the challenges he has faced this season.

The 32-year-old forward was brought in as part of West Ham’s significant summer investment. However, he has not lived up to expectations, but much of this is down to circumstances outside of his control. Despite his age, Füllkrug had enjoyed a late-blooming career in the Bundesliga and on the international stage, emerging as a potent forward with a traditional target-man style. Known for his physical presence and ability to get on the scoresheet, many expected Füllkrug to become a reliable source of goals for the Hammers.

However, injury problems have hindered his ability to showcase his true potential in the Premier League. According to sports physiologist Dr. Rajpal Brar, Füllkrug is recovering from a “Grade 3 – very significant muscular injury” to his hamstring, which could lead to surgery if it doesn’t heal properly. To regain match fitness, Füllkrug is expected to take part in some bounce matches over the coming weeks. This would allow him to contribute, at least in some capacity, as the season draws to a close.

In the absence of Füllkrug, West Ham secured the loan signing of Evan Ferguson in the January transfer window to provide cover. However, with no option to purchase Ferguson permanently, the club’s focus remains on getting Füllkrug back to full fitness for the next season.

While hindsight is always perfect, the £27 million spent on Füllkrug was considered a bargain given his prolific record in recent years. Despite his age, the German forward still has time to make a significant impact at West Ham once fully fit. Fans will be hoping for a strong finish to the season and a more fruitful campaign next year for Füllkrug.
