Nick Woltemade’s performance in Newcastle United’s 1-0 defeat at Manchester United has come under scrutiny, with Rio Ferdinand openly questioning the striker’s use of his physical advantages at Old Trafford.

Newcastle United dominated possession for long periods but once again failed to translate control into clear-cut chances, leaving them empty-handed after a frustrating night in Manchester.

Ferdinand stunned by lack of physical presence

Woltemade was withdrawn on 67 minutes without registering a single shot on goal, a statistic that raised eyebrows given his height and profile. Speaking on his YouTube channel, former United defender Rio Ferdinand admitted he was baffled by Newcastle’s failure to exploit what looked like a clear mismatch.

“I’ll be stunned if Newcastle aren’t looking at their big No.9 and thinking, ‘They’re playing Martinez and Shaw on the left side – let’s play on that,’” Ferdinand said.

“They didn’t. I just don’t understand it. If you’ve got a physical advantage somewhere on the pitch, surely you’ve got to hone in on that. That’s one thing I was surprised about with Newcastle.”

Ferdinand pointed to how physical forwards have historically targeted smaller full-backs, suggesting Woltemade could have tested United’s defence far more directly.

Fans frustrated by tactical call

Woltemade’s substitution also sparked frustration among Newcastle supporters, many of whom wanted to see him paired with Yoane Wissa in a two-striker system. Instead, Wissa replaced Woltemade, and Newcastle’s attacking output changed little as United defended their lead.

The Magpies ended the game with plenty of possession but minimal threat — a familiar theme in away fixtures this season.

Eddie Howe admits attacking problems persist

Head coach Eddie Howe did not shy away from Newcastle’s attacking shortcomings after the match, acknowledging that away form in front of goal continues to undermine otherwise encouraging performances.

“Away from home, we haven’t done well enough in front of goal,” Howe admitted. “Some of the games we’ve been really flat in front of goal.

“The feeling that you’re going to score at any time is such a powerful confidence lifter for the team, and we haven’t had that enough. Ultimately, that’s what’s cost us tonight.”

Howe suggested Newcastle were unlucky not to take something from the game but conceded the same pattern has repeated itself too often on the road.

“I think you could make an argument we should have got something today, but we haven’t — and we’ve had that feeling too many times away from home this year,” he added.

Performance vs reality

Howe insisted performances have improved since the last international break, but acknowledged that results — not progress — are what matter most.

“I thought today was another step forward in terms of performance,” he said. “But no one really wants to hear that. Ultimately, the result is the most important thing, and we’re well aware of that.”

Having followed Newcastle closely this season, the issue is becoming increasingly clear: dominance without decisiveness is leaving them stuck in mid-table and eroding belief.

Key insights

  • Nick Woltemade failed to register a shot before being substituted
  • Rio Ferdinand questioned Newcastle’s use of Woltemade’s physicality
  • Fans wanted a two-striker system late on
  • Eddie Howe admitted away goals remain a major issue

What’s next?

Newcastle’s challenge is no longer about effort or control, but execution. Whether Woltemade remains the focal point or Howe tweaks his attacking approach, goals away from home must arrive soon — or familiar frustrations will continue to define their season.

Should Newcastle change how they use Nick Woltemade — or is the issue bigger than one striker?
