Nick Woltemade has been making waves for both club and country, and his latest performance for Germany has seen him lauded across the German media after scoring twice in a crucial World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg.

The Newcastle United forward struck twice in the second half to spare Julian Nagelsmann’s side from embarrassment in what Kicker described as a “near disgrace.” The brace secured a 2–0 win that keeps Germany level on points with Slovakia, ensuring they need only a draw in their final qualifier to book a place at next summer’s World Cup.

“Irreplaceable up front” – German media praise Woltemade

Woltemade’s impact was immediate and decisive. Scoring just four minutes after the restart, the 23-year-old settled the nerves of an underperforming German side before sealing the result late on. His composed finishing and link-up play were widely praised in the post-match analysis.

Kicker wrote: “Meanwhile, Woltemade (Newcastle), who scored twice, underlined his irreplaceable position up front.”

FLZ Fränkische Landeszeitung echoed those sentiments, stating that Germany “narrowly avoided humiliation thanks to Woltemade’s brace,” while Sky Sports Germany and Sport1 both labelled him “the saviour” of the night.

In a glowing piece from Spiegel, the striker even drew comparisons to England’s all-time leading scorer Harry Kane for his tactical intelligence and clinical finishing.

“Tactically a Harry Kane lookalike,” Spiegel wrote. “He was supposed to drop back to the left-sided central midfield position in the early stages to create space up front. In the second half, however, he proved why he’s best suited to the front line — converting two excellent passes in true centre-forward fashion.”

From Bundesliga to Premier League brilliance

Woltemade’s rise has been rapid since joining Newcastle from the Bundesliga in the summer. His high-profile move, which saw him turn down Bayern Munich, raised eyebrows in Germany — but the decision is now paying off handsomely.

At St James’ Park, the striker has already become a key figure under Eddie Howe, scoring six goals across all competitions and quickly adapting to the physicality of the Premier League. His ability to drop deep, link play, and finish decisively has made him indispensable both domestically and internationally.

Newcastle’s newest talisman

At Newcastle, Woltemade’s arrival has helped fill the void left by Alexander Isak’s summer move to Liverpool. His combination of size, technique, and football IQ has already made him a fan favourite on Tyneside.

Bild and Sport1 report that there is already a growing consensus in Germany that Woltemade should be Germany’s starting striker heading into the 2026 World Cup. Given his form for both club and country, that opinion is becoming increasingly difficult to argue against.

He’ll look to continue that momentum when Newcastle face Manchester City next weekend, a fixture that will test his credentials against Premier League champions — and perhaps further strengthen his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising No.9s.

Our View: A star coming of age

In our view, Nick Woltemade’s development has been nothing short of exceptional. At 23, he has already shown the maturity, versatility, and end product that elite forwards are built on. The Harry Kane comparisons may feel lofty, but his technical precision, spatial awareness, and work ethic make them understandable.

If his form continues, Woltemade could soon be both Newcastle’s and Germany’s main man for years to come.

They played against farmers - dont compare him to Kane yet! He has a great start and definitely better than expected to be honest, but no where near the levels of Kane (yet)
