Newcastle United are targeting Antwerp’s Mahamadou Doumbia as a key midfield signing this summer — and manager Eddie Howe is leading the charge to get the deal done.

The 21-year-old Malian international has been compared to Manchester City legend Yaya Toure, and has caught the eye of several clubs across Europe, including Juventus, Napoli, and Everton. However, Newcastle are now considered the most active suitor, with talks already underway.

Why Doumbia Has Caught Eddie Howe’s Eye

Doumbia’s rise in Belgium has been rapid. Known for his power, ball-carrying ability and thunderous long-range shooting, the midfielder has built a reputation as a complete No. 8. Newcastle have been searching for midfield dynamism, and the Mali international could offer that — especially with Sandro Tonali returning from suspension and Bruno Guimarães attracting interest.

“Doumbia has impressive technical ability, exceptional projection, and a powerful shot,” wrote Africa Foot, who describe him as a Yaya Toure-style midfielder. — Africa Foot

Doumbia’s Stats at Antwerp (2024/25)

Stat Value
Appearances (All Comps) 39
Goals 4
Assists 6
Tackles per 90 2.3
Pass Accuracy 85.9%

What’s the Hold-Up in the Deal?

While Doumbia has a €20m release clause, Newcastle haven’t yet triggered it. Sources suggest Antwerp won’t negotiate below that price, and are happy to keep the player unless a full payment is made.

Given the strong Premier League interest — with Brighton and Everton also monitoring him — a bidding race isn’t out of the question. However, Newcastle have made the first real move, contacting his agents and placing him on their summer shortlist.

Analyst Verdict: Smart Move or Gamble?

For €20m, Doumbia represents excellent value. He’s already a senior international for Mali, has experience in European competitions, and fits the physical profile of a Premier League midfielder. Newcastle are looking for long-term midfield reinforcements, and this could be a calculated move in line with FFP-conscious spending.

Still, fans will want to know whether he’s ready to start regularly — or arrive as depth behind Guimarães and Joelinton.

Key Insights

What’s Next for Newcastle and Doumbia?

With contact made and interest declared, the next few days could be pivotal. If Newcastle want to land Doumbia before pre-season ends, a formal bid is expected soon — and they may need to move quickly to avoid a late hijack.

Would Doumbia be a smart signing for Newcastle — or should they focus on Premier League experience instead?
