Newcastle United head into their Champions League clash with Barcelona facing another potential injury concern after Joe Willock was forced off during the win against Chelsea.

Eddie Howe’s side secured a crucial 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge thanks to Anthony Gordon’s first-half goal, but the result was slightly overshadowed by Willock’s late injury.

The midfielder went down twice during the closing stages of the match before being substituted in the 77th minute, raising doubts about his availability for Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 second leg in Spain.

Joe Willock injury creates concern for Eddie Howe

Willock played a key role in Newcastle’s winning goal after producing a powerful run before squaring the ball for Gordon to score.

However, his match ended prematurely after he appeared to suffer a thigh problem late in the second half.

Speaking after the match, Eddie Howe admitted he was unsure about the severity of the issue.

“I don’t know 100% how he is. I’ve not had time to sit with him and discuss it.” — Eddie Howe

The Newcastle manager also praised Willock’s contribution to the winning goal.

“I thought he was immense today. That’s Joe at his very best. Athleticism, speed and then a really good decision to square it to Anthony.” — Eddie Howe

Willock’s early substitution forced Howe to adjust his system late in the game, introducing Dan Burn and switching to a back five to secure the victory.

Newcastle already dealing with midfield injury issues

The potential absence of Willock would further stretch Newcastle’s midfield options ahead of the Barcelona clash.

Bruno Guimaraes remains sidelined with a hamstring injury and is only expected to travel to Spain to support the squad rather than feature on the pitch.

Lewis Miley has also been out since January after picking up an injury during the Champions League draw against Paris Saint-Germain. While he is progressing in his recovery, he remains a doubt for the trip to Camp Nou.

Meanwhile, Sandro Tonali missed the Chelsea match due to illness but Newcastle hope he will recover in time to be available for selection.

Barcelona clash could define Newcastle’s European campaign

Newcastle travel to Spain with the tie finely balanced after the first leg finished 1-1 at St James’ Park.

Harvey Barnes looked to have secured a late victory for the Magpies with an 86th-minute goal, only for Barcelona to equalise shortly afterwards through Lamine Yamal from the penalty spot.

The result leaves the second leg wide open as Howe’s side attempt to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

However, Newcastle’s growing injury list could play a key role in determining the outcome of the tie.
