Newcastle United’s injury troubles have returned at an awkward time. While not quite as severe as the crisis that hit two seasons ago, Eddie Howe is again juggling a stretched squad just as the fixtures pile up.

New signing Yoane Wissa, who arrived from Brentford in September, is yet to make his debut. Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento, and William Osula are also on the treatment table, forcing Newcastle to lean heavily on squad depth in both domestic and European fixtures.

Here’s the latest update on each player’s condition and expected return.

Yoane Wissa

Wissa has been sidelined since suffering a knee injury in September, missing 16 games so far. Despite returning to light training, the 28-year-old remains short of full match fitness.

According to The Daily Mail, Wissa is “not currently injured” but still rebuilding sharpness after a lengthy lay-off. Newcastle’s staff are unwilling to rush him back, particularly ahead of a reunion with former club Brentford this weekend.

Potential return date: Unknown (expected later in November)

Anthony Gordon

Gordon’s inconsistent campaign has taken another frustrating turn. The winger limped off against Athletic Bilbao with what Howe described as “a recurrence of his hip injury.”

After a bright run in the Champions League, his domestic form has dipped, and this latest setback adds to a stop-start season. The extent of the problem remains unclear pending further assessment.
Howe said:

“It seems like a recurrence of his hip injury that has been plaguing him in recent weeks, so we’ll assess that and see what damage is done.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Tino Livramento

There is at least some optimism around Livramento. Out since October with a knee injury, the right-back is close to a return and could feature later this month.

Howe revealed that the player is progressing on schedule and may be available after the international break.

Manager’s update:

“Tino is still on track; we’re looking at the Manchester City game for his return.”

Potential return date: Saturday, 22 November 2025 – vs Manchester City (H)

William Osula

The Danish striker has been dealing with ankle discomfort and was withdrawn from the Bilbao squad despite being listed on the bench. Howe admitted the decision was precautionary but necessary.

Howe explained:

“We’ve discussed his ankle at length. We felt it was best to withdraw him and get him 100% right.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Dan Burn

The veteran defender was forced off late against Bilbao after treatment but appeared in good spirits as he left the pitch. Early signs suggest the issue is not serious, though Howe will confirm in his pre-match press conference.

Potential return date: Sunday, 9 November 2025 – vs Brentford (A)

Our View — Caution May Be Key

In our view, Howe is taking the right approach by prioritising long-term recovery over short-term fixes. Wissa’s extended absence has already disrupted Newcastle’s attacking balance, but the club’s cautious handling should prevent further setbacks. If Livramento returns as planned and Gordon’s injury proves minor, the squad could stabilise before the festive run.

Key Insights

  • Big takeaway: Newcastle juggling five injury concerns ahead of Brentford trip.
  • Quick stat: Wissa has missed 16 matches since joining in September.
  • Positive note: Livramento on track for late-November comeback.
  • Concern: Gordon and Osula both under fresh assessment.
  • Squad depth: Howe reluctant to rush returns amid fixture congestion.

What’s Next

Newcastle travel to Brentford on Sunday, then prepare for Manchester City (H) after the international break. Howe will give further updates in Friday’s press conference — but with several players nearing fitness, there’s cautious optimism that the worst may soon be over.
