Brentford defender Nathan Collins has admitted it was difficult to be dropped from the starting line-up earlier this season, but the Ireland international insists he remained focused on supporting the team during that period.

Collins returned to the starting XI on 3 March 2026 as Brentford secured a 0-0 Premier League draw away to Bournemouth. The result extended the club’s push toward European qualification, with Keith Andrews’ side showing resilience under pressure at the Vitality Stadium.

Despite Bournemouth creating several chances and striking the woodwork twice, Brentford held firm, with goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher producing key saves to secure a clean sheet.

Nathan Collins reflects on Brentford selection setback

The centre-back had not started a league match since 25 January before being restored to the line-up against Bournemouth. During that spell he watched from the bench for five consecutive Premier League fixtures.

Speaking after the match, Collins acknowledged that losing his place was challenging, particularly as he had previously held the captain’s armband.

“It’s never easy being out of the team. It’s a tough position to be in. It was my first time obviously being captain and out of that role, so I found it a difficult one. You kind of do it for the lads and do it for this team. We’re all such good friends and mates that you want them to win and want them to be successful.” — Nathan Collins

Collins added that the internal competition within Brentford’s squad has raised standards across the team.

“I kind of dug in. It’s a compliment to the squad and where it is, the competition for places, who can come in and change games. The squad is strong, we’re in a good place and we’re all doing well.” — Nathan Collins

Brentford defensive resilience earns Bournemouth draw

Although Brentford created fewer clear chances than their hosts, the defensive unit delivered a disciplined performance to leave the south coast with a valuable point.

Having followed Brentford closely in recent weeks, their defensive organisation has often been a defining factor in tight matches. The return of Collins to the back line appeared to reinforce that structure.

However, it remains too early to determine whether he will retain his place for the remainder of the campaign as Andrews continues to rotate his options.

Brentford targeting European qualification

Brentford currently sit seventh in the Premier League table and remain firmly in contention for European football next season.
