Murillo urges critics to “Pay More Attention” after Brazil debut backlash

Murillo has been a standout for Nottingham Forest since arriving from Corinthians in the summer of 2023, earning widespread praise in the Premier League and catching the attention of the Brazil national team.

The 22-year-old’s consistent form earned him his first senior call-up in November, and last month, he finally made his debut for the Seleção in a tough 4-1 loss to Argentina in a World Cup qualifier. Subbed off at half-time with Brazil trailing 3-1, Murillo was met with harsh criticism from both the media and fans back home.

Speaking to ESPN Brazil following Nottingham Forest’s 2-1 loss to Aston Villa, Murillo responded to the backlash:
"I ask people to follow a little more closely, because we can’t judge someone based on just one game. I think some criticisms should be thought through a little more before they are made."

"I think people need to follow a little more closely and see what I’m doing in the Premier League, what I was able to do to get to the Brazilian national team. When you get there, it’s because you’re having a good time. Thank God I’m having a great season, a great time, and I managed to fulfil my dream of getting there."

With Dorival Júnior now dismissed from his role as Brazil head coach, the national team is in transition. Murillo believes the support of fans is crucial as the Seleção navigates this difficult phase.

"People need to look at it with a little more affection, pay more attention, just like the Forest fans, who even with games that weren’t as good like today’s [defeat to Villa], we kept fighting until the end of the game, we almost got a draw."

"So, I think the Brazilian people have to look at things with a little more affection, and value the players they have. So that this situation, which is not so pleasant in Brazil, can be reversed, and I think that together we can make this better."

While it remains to be seen how fans and the media in Brazil will respond to his remarks, Murillo’s comments highlight his desire to be recognized for his full body of work, not just a single game.
