Mika Godts has been urged to take inspiration from Jeremy Doku if he wants to force his way into Belgium’s World Cup plans.

The Ajax winger has enjoyed a productive season in the Eredivisie, but former Belgium international Toby Alderweireld believes refining his decision making in the mould of Manchester City’s Doku could elevate him to the next level.

Speaking to Voetbal Primeur, Alderweireld pointed to Doku’s evolution as a benchmark for the 20-year-old.

Mika Godts told to follow Jeremy Doku example

Godts joined Ajax for €1m from Genk in 2023 and broke into the first team in 2024. Since then, he has recorded 20 goals and 20 assists in 98 appearances, along with nine goals and four assists for the U21s.

This season alone, he has contributed 12 goals and 10 assists in 31 matches, underlining his growing influence. His latest display — two goals and an assist in a 4-1 win over Fortuna Sittard — strengthened his case for international recognition.

Yet he has not featured for Belgium at senior or Under-21 level, with his last appearance coming at Under-19 level in November 2023.

Alderweireld believes that can change.

“With Jérémy Doku, who is world-class, Dodi Lukebakio, and Leandro Trossard, we have a lot of attacking options,” he said.

“He should take a cue from Doku in that regard. Don’t pass someone for the sake of passing, but only when it’s necessary. That ultimately leads to better results. Goals and assists, you need those.”

Having followed Godts’ development this season, his output is clear, but Alderweireld’s point focuses on efficiency. Doku’s rise at Manchester City has been built not only on flair but on improved timing and end product in decisive moments.

However, it remains too early to suggest a World Cup call-up is imminent. Belgium’s attacking depth remains strong, and consistency at elite European level may be required.

Arsenal interest adds summer intrigue

Godts’ performances have also attracted Premier League attention. Reports have linked Arsenal with interest, including a late January enquiry that Ajax rejected. His agent subsequently confirmed discussions had taken place.

If interest intensifies in the summer window, Godts’ trajectory could accelerate further — particularly if he maintains or improves his goal and assist numbers.

Key Insights

  • Godts has 12 goals and 10 assists this season.
  • Alderweireld urged him to model aspects of his game on Doku.
  • He has yet to feature for Belgium at senior level.
  • Arsenal have previously shown transfer interest.
  • Consistency may determine World Cup selection prospects.

What’s Next

Godts’ immediate focus remains sustaining his impact for Ajax. Strong performances in domestic and European fixtures could sharpen his international prospects.

The summer window may also prove pivotal. A potential move to a top-five league would likely increase visibility ahead of major tournaments, but such a step would demand further maturity in his decision-making.

Can Godts turn promise into selection and follow Doku’s path to the biggest stage?
