Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has admitted the squad are going through a “terrible time” after their heavy Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid, describing the opening stages of the match as a “doomsday scenario”.

Spurs suffered a 5–2 loss in Madrid on Tuesday night, with the game effectively decided inside the first half as Atlético raced into a commanding lead.

Van de Ven started the match in central defence but later reflected on the chaotic start that saw Tottenham fall four goals behind within the first 22 minutes.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport after the match, the Netherlands international explained how quickly events spiralled out of control for Tottenham.

“Terrible, to be honest. A doomsday scenario. Everything that could go wrong in the first twenty minutes went wrong.” — Micky van de Ven

The defender also acknowledged his own involvement in the difficult opening spell, noting that multiple players struggled with slips and errors early in the match.

Van de Ven suggested the situation developed so quickly that it became almost impossible for the team to recover.

Sympathy for Antonín Kinský after difficult debut

One of the most dramatic moments came when Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinský was substituted after just 17 minutes during his Champions League debut.

The 22 year old was replaced by Guglielmo Vicario after several early mistakes contributed to Atlético’s rapid advantage.

Van de Ven expressed sympathy for his teammate following the difficult introduction to European football.

“It’s terrible for him too. He’s making his debut. You wouldn’t wish this on anyone.” — Micky van de Ven

The defender said the team understood how challenging such moments can be for young players on a major stage.

Tottenham season taking mental toll

Tottenham’s defeat in Madrid adds to a difficult season for the club, particularly in the Premier League where they currently sit just above the relegation zone.

Manager Igor Tudor has lost all four matches since taking charge following the departure of Thomas Frank last month.

Van de Ven admitted the repeated setbacks have had a significant impact on the squad.

“We’re just being dealt blow after blow. It’s really difficult.” — Micky van de Ven

The defender also revealed he has stepped away from social media and online criticism during this challenging period.

“I’m not on my phone anymore. I’m completely done with it. Only family and stuff.” — Micky van de Ven

Suspension adds to Tottenham challenges

Tottenham now turn their attention back to the Premier League, where the club faces a crucial run of fixtures.

Van de Ven will miss the upcoming match against Liverpool at Anfield after receiving a red card in the recent league defeat to Crystal Palace.
