Maximilian Wöber’s loan spell at Werder Bremen has not gone to plan, and it now looks increasingly unlikely the move will turn permanent.
The Leeds United defender has barely featured this season due to injury, leaving his future uncertain heading into the summer.
Maximilian Wöber struggling to make impact at Werder Bremen
Wöber arrived in Germany last summer with the hope of rebuilding momentum after leaving Leeds again following their return to the Premier League.
Instead, things went wrong almost immediately.
He lasted just 79 minutes on his debut in the DFB-Pokal before picking up a hamstring injury. That setback ruled him out for months, and further problems followed after a brief return in January.
By March, the defender confirmed he had suffered another muscle tear, meaning he has not played a competitive match since August.
From the last few months of Bremen’s season, it is clear the move has not delivered what either side expected.
Werder Bremen director responds to transfer situation
Sporting director Clemens Fritz has now addressed the situation, and his comments suggest there is little urgency around making the deal permanent.
“We haven’t yet discussed what will happen in the summer.” — Clemens Fritz
While that leaves the door technically open, the reality appears quite different.
Reports in Germany indicate it is ‘highly unlikely’ Bremen will trigger the option to buy, given the lack of availability.
Fritz did, however, express hope that Wöber could still feature before the season ends.
“We will gradually increase his workload and hope that he can still play for us this season.” — Clemens Fritz
