Mauricio Pochettino has opened the door to a potential return to Tottenham Hotspur, admitting he would consider going back if the “right conditions” are in place after the 2026 World Cup.

The Argentine, currently managing the United States national team, spoke candidly in an interview with FourFourTwo, reflecting on his deep connection to Spurs and the possibility of revisiting a chapter that defined his managerial career.

Mauricio Pochettino Tottenham return stance revealed

Pochettino spent five years at Tottenham between 2014 and 2019, overseeing one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history. His tenure included four consecutive Champions League qualifications and a run to the 2019 final.

Now, years after his departure, he has made it clear that the emotional link to the club remains strong.

“Yes, why not? If the right conditions are there, of course. Tottenham feels like home to us. We identify with the club’s values and supporters.” — Mauricio Pochettino, via FourFourTwo

His comments underline a continued attachment to the club, even after spells with Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and now the United States.

Legacy at Spurs still shapes narrative

Pochettino’s impact at Tottenham extended beyond results. He oversaw a period of sustained progress, including a second-place Premier League finish in 2016/17 with 86 points, the club’s highest in the modern era.

That season also saw Spurs go unbeaten at White Hart Lane in the league, conceding just 26 goals across the campaign. During his time in north London, he played a central role in developing key players such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Son Heung-min.

Having followed Tottenham closely during that period, the consistency and identity established under Pochettino marked a significant shift in how the club was perceived domestically and in Europe.

However, it remains too early to determine whether a return would ever align with the club’s current direction.

Current context complicates potential reunion

Tottenham’s present situation adds uncertainty to any future scenario. The club are currently battling near the relegation zone, raising questions about their immediate direction and stability.

At the same time, Roberto De Zerbi has recently been appointed on a long-term deal, suggesting there is no imminent managerial vacancy.

Pochettino himself made clear that his focus remains on the World Cup with the United States, with any future decisions likely to come after the tournament.

“Right now it’s about enjoying the World Cup. After that, I’ve always said I came so close to winning the Premier League and Champions League, and want to try again.” — Mauricio Pochettino, via FourFourTwo
