Lothar Matthäus advises Luka Vušković on Bayern interest

Lothar Matthäus has advised Tottenham prospect Luka Vušković to resist interest from Bayern Munich and prioritise regular playing time elsewhere for the next year or two.

The 18-year-old centre-back has impressed during his loan spell at HSV Hamburg this season, quickly establishing himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most promising young defenders. His performances have not gone unnoticed, with reports in Germany linking him to Bayern after intermediaries reportedly presented his name to the club.

However, Matthäus believes a move to a European heavyweight at this stage could stall his development.

Speaking to SportBILD, the former Germany captain made clear that while he rates Vušković highly, he feels game time must come first.

“I’m convinced of the player’s potential,” Matthäus said. “But for me, it would be more important that Vušković gets playing time and doesn’t focus on the big pay checks.

“Even though he’s certainly confident: But if I already have my doubts about Schlotterbeck, that he won’t easily get past Tah and Upamecano, then, if I were Vušković, I’d play somewhere else for another year or two.”

The warning centres on competition. Bayern’s defensive depth means immediate opportunities would be limited, and Matthäus believes patience is crucial at this stage of Vušković’s career.

Vušković’s rise this season has been notable. In addition to becoming a regular starter, he was voted Bundesliga Player of the Season So Far in January, collecting 60 per cent of the fan vote. He has also been named Rookie of the Month on three occasions.

Having followed his progress closely, his composure in possession and aerial presence have stood out, particularly given his age.

Tottenham view him as a long-term asset and did not expect him to challenge for first-team minutes immediately. The loan to HSV was designed to accelerate development through consistent exposure.

Vušković’s future may depend heavily on developments in North London. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have both been linked with potential moves, while Radu Drăgușin is also reported to be exploring options abroad.

If departures materialise, Tottenham’s plans could shift quickly. A new manager is expected to shape the squad this summer, and defensive restructuring may open pathways sooner than anticipated.

At the same time, Vušković has expressed a desire to remain at HSV for another season, partly to play alongside his brother. That option may appeal if stability and minutes remain the priority.

It remains too early to draw firm conclusions about the direction Tottenham will take, but Matthäus’ advice is clear: development over prestige.

Tottenham’s managerial appointment and summer transfer activity will shape Vušković’s pathway. If defensive exits occur, integration into the first-team squad could be accelerated.

Alternatively, another season in Germany may offer the continuity needed for steady progression. For now, the focus remains on finishing the campaign strongly with HSV.
