Matt Doherty has delivered a brutally honest assessment of Wolves’ struggles, insisting the squad must show fight and accountability as their Premier League situation continues to deteriorate.
The defender was outspoken following Saturday’s defeat to Brentford — Wolves’ tenth consecutive loss — and his stance had not softened when he spoke at Compton Park on Monday ahead of this weekend’s daunting trip to Anfield.
For Doherty, the pain of seeing the club he loves in such difficulty is exactly why standards must rise immediately.
‘We’re coming unstuck when it matters’
Reflecting on the Brentford loss, Matt Doherty admitted Wolves failed when the game was there to be won.
“I still feel the same,” he said. “We were in the game for a period of time, and then it got to an hour in where we had to try and win the game, and I don't know what happened then.
“Do we lose a little bit of focus? Are we working hard enough? They’re questions that we can ask each other, and I'm not excluded from any criticism — I'm included in that completely.”
Doherty stressed that Wolves’ inability to seize key moments is costing them repeatedly.
“The moment to try and win a game, we're coming a bit unstuck, and it's up to us as players to figure it out.”
‘No time or energy to feel sorry for ourselves’
The Republic of Ireland international made clear that self-pity has no place in the Premier League.
“It’s the hardest league in the world — you're not going to get anything given to you,” he said.
“We don't have time or energy to feel sorry for ourselves. We have to wake up for training every day, chest up, head high and work as hard as we possibly can.
“At the moment, there are 19 other teams ripping the Premier League away from us, and we need to fight back, even if the end result is the same.”
Doherty added that while results matter, how Wolves respond matters just as much.
“There are ways to go about it, and I'd rather do it a certain way — not the way that we're doing at the moment.”
Backing the manager amid pressure
Despite the poor run of form, Doherty was adamant that the coaching staff are not to blame, throwing his support behind head coach Rob Edwards.
“We've not started off well enough for him,” he admitted. “But the coaching staff have not been the issue at all. We've been coached well, our game plans have been good — we're just making individual mistakes.
“This is all of us. None of us have reached the level of last year, myself included. That creates a perfect storm, and when you're not winning games in the Premier League, it’s a slippery slope.”
‘This club gave me everything’
Doherty also spoke emotionally about his connection to Wolverhampton Wanderers, admitting the current situation hurts deeply.
“The club’s given me absolutely everything in my whole life,” he said. “They took a chance on me when I was 18. There were plenty of times they could have gone a different way, but they stood by me and believed in me.
“I couldn’t be more grateful — and that’s why this hurts a lot.”
Liverpool next at Anfield
Wolves now face Liverpool on Saturday 27 December at Anfield, an emotional occasion with Diogo Jota set to be remembered by both clubs.
For Doherty, the challenge is clear: fight, pride and effort — regardless of the odds.
