Manchester United's reported interest in Mateus Fernandes has been reinforced by a glowing assessment from one of the coaches who played a key role in the midfielder's development.

The 21-year-old West Ham player has emerged as a reported target for Manchester United as the club assesses midfield options ahead of a potentially transformative summer. While Fernandes' future remains uncertain following West Ham's relegation to the Championship, his individual performances have continued to attract admiration both in England and Portugal.

Now Vasco Seabra, who coached Fernandes during his loan spell at Estoril, has offered fresh insight into why some of Europe's biggest clubs are beginning to take notice.

Former coach believes Mateus Fernandes has no obvious ceiling

Speaking to Rádio Renascença, Seabra admitted he still struggles to define the limits of Fernandes' potential.

The Arouca manager worked closely with the midfielder during the 2023/24 campaign and believes the player consistently improves whenever he is challenged at a higher level.

"Mateus has shown season after season that the higher the level he competes at, the better the response he gives," Seabra explained.

"I still don't really know what level he will eventually stop at or stabilise at."

The coach went even further, suggesting Fernandes belongs to a rare group of players whose performances improve as the demands around them increase.

"He seems to be one of those players who, the higher the level, the more value and quality he can add to a team."

For a player now being linked with Manchester United and even reported interest from Real Madrid, those comments provide a notable endorsement.

Technical quality matched by mentality

Seabra's assessment was not limited to Fernandes' ability on the ball.

The Portuguese coach highlighted mentality as one of the midfielder's defining strengths, describing him as a player capable of handling pressure and responsibility from a young age.

"He has a huge range of abilities. I mean, he has technical quality and he's a kid with a fantastic heart and mentality."

Having followed Fernandes' development from Portugal to England, the rapid rise has been impressive. While West Ham endured a difficult season collectively, Fernandes emerged with his reputation enhanced rather than damaged.

That ability to stand out in struggling teams is often viewed as a significant indicator when elite clubs assess young players.

Why Manchester United may be encouraged

Manchester United's reported midfield plans centre on adding energy, technical security and players capable of developing into long-term starters.

Many of the qualities highlighted by Seabra align with those requirements.

The former Estoril coach revealed Fernandes responds positively to high expectations rather than seeking constant reassurance.

"Mateus isn't someone who needs emotional comfort all the time."

"Essentially, Mateus needs people to trust him and demand things from him."

Those comments paint the picture of a player comfortable operating under pressure, a characteristic that would be essential at a club like Manchester United.

Seabra acknowledged that he expected Fernandes to reach Premier League level relatively quickly. What surprised him was the speed at which the midfielder has begun appearing in discussions involving some of football’s biggest clubs.

“It would be false of me to say I expected that, two years later, he could be in Real Madrid’s plans.”

However, the coach made it clear that the player’s upward trajectory has never really stopped.

What’s Next

Manchester United's midfield plans are expected to become clearer as the summer transfer window progresses. Fernandes remains one of several players reportedly under consideration, but his profile continues to attract attention across Europe.

West Ham's relegation could increase uncertainty around his future, particularly if clubs decide to test the London side's resolve with formal offers. Much will depend on whether Manchester United convert reported interest into concrete negotiations.

For now, Fernandes' former coach appears convinced of one thing: the midfielder's development is still accelerating, and his ultimate ceiling remains unknown.

Could Mateus Fernandes become the next young midfielder to make the leap from promising talent to Manchester United regular?
