Leeds United striker Mateo Joseph was “frustrated” with manager Daniel Farke after his summer move to Real Betis collapsed at the final stages, according to ABC Sevilla.
The Spanish outlet reports that Betis remain disappointed they couldn’t finalise a deal for the 21-year-old, who had been identified as the club’s top attacking target. Talks progressed well early in the window — but Leeds’ high demands ultimately killed the transfer.
“The Deal Was Very Close”
ABC cite sources close to the negotiation who say Betis were optimistic about completing the signing before the window closed. Joseph, who was eager to return to Spain and frustrated with his lack of opportunities under Farke, had already signalled his approval.
“The deal was very close with Betis, who were the first club to show interest, but it couldn’t be finalised,” a source told ABC. — ABC Sevilla
However, Leeds’ stance soon hardened. The Premier League side demanded a fee in excess of €15 million for a permanent sale — and refused to include a purchase option in any loan deal. Betis, unable to meet those terms, walked away.
The Spanish report adds that Leeds’ refusal to compromise “prolonged a tense process” of negotiations that left all parties frustrated.
Real Betis Forced to Look Elsewhere
Betis sporting director Ramón Planes had identified Joseph early as a priority signing. The club’s long-standing interest stemmed from his Spanish roots and youth-level experience with Espanyol, before he joined Leeds in 2021.
But with talks collapsing, Betis were forced to move on — and Mallorca capitalised, striking a deal to sign Joseph late in the window.
The missed opportunity has left lingering frustration at Heliópolis, where Betis officials still believe Joseph could have been a perfect fit for Manuel Pellegrini’s tactical setup.
A “Turbulent Summer” for Joseph
For Joseph, the failed move capped off what Spanish media describe as a “turbulent summer.” The young striker wanted a fresh start after limited minutes under Daniel Farke, but found himself stuck in limbo as negotiations dragged on.
His frustration stemmed from a lack of first-team opportunities at Leeds, where he started just six Championship matches last season. The club’s decision to block Betis’ loan approach despite his desire to leave reportedly strained his relationship with Farke and the Leeds hierarchy.
Our View: Leeds Played Hardball, and It Backfired
In our view, Leeds may have overplayed their hand. While their valuation reflected Joseph’s potential, refusing a loan with a reasonable purchase clause cost them leverage — and an opportunity to cash in on a player ready to move.
Joseph’s situation under Farke has echoes of other young players caught between ambition and managerial caution. Mallorca’s move looks shrewd, while Betis will see this as one that got away.
