Enzo Maresca has urged Chelsea supporters to view the campaign as a “marathon, not a sprint” as he continues to rotate heavily during a demanding winter schedule. Speaking ahead of this afternoon’s Premier League clash with Everton at Stamford Bridge, the Chelsea head coach explained the delicate balance between fielding his strongest team and managing the physical load on his players across a gruelling season.

Chelsea enter the match on the back of a difficult run, failing to win any of their last three games since the start of December. Yet Maresca insists the performances remain strong and that his team’s growth will come with experience, not panic.

Maresca: rotating is essential in a long season

The Italian pointed out that while he has made changes between competitions, the core of Chelsea’s team has remained consistent throughout big matches.

“In games like Arsenal, Barcelona, Atalanta, Tottenham, Wolves at home, we have on the pitch the same eight or nine players. Cucurella, Enzo, Fofana, Chalobah, Pedro, João Pedro, Malo, Reece — they are always there.” — Enzo Maresca

Maresca highlighted that between Bournemouth and Atalanta he made five changes, but the backbone of the squad still remained.

“I see this season like a marathon, not a sprint. The season is long, we have so many games. If you use the same players all the time, you will struggle in terms of physical condition and keeping them healthy.”

With Chelsea competing on multiple fronts and depth still proving inconsistent in key areas, Maresca’s challenge is maintaining freshness without sacrificing rhythm.

No mentality problem — just a bump in the road

After being named Premier League Manager of the Month for November, Chelsea hit a tricky spell with a 0–0 draw against Bournemouth and a 3–1 defeat away to Leeds United. Some pundits suggested Chelsea freeze when expected to dominate, but Maresca rejected this outright.

“The team is doing well — it’s just one week where we dropped something. Hopefully we can start again against Everton. Overall, I think the team is doing quite good.”

Asked whether Chelsea struggle mentally when they are favourites, Maresca said he has “no doubt” the players have the winning mindset required.

“I don’t think our players lack the mentality to win these games. With more games and experience, we will be more ready. When you drop points, you understand what to do better, and in the next one you improve.”

Why rotation matters — and why the message is important

Chelsea’s season has already demanded high-intensity performances across multiple competitions. Key players — such as Reece James, Wesley Fofana, and Enzo Fernández — are returning from long-term injuries or high workloads, and Maresca must avoid overuse.

Regular Core in Big Matches

  • Marc Cucurella
  • Enzo Fernández
  • Wesley Fofana
  • Trevoh Chalobah
  • Pedro Neto
  • João Pedro
  • Malo Gusto
  • Reece James

These eight or nine names reflect Maresca’s trusted structure — but relying on them constantly would be unsustainable.

Maresca’s “marathon not a sprint” message is exactly what Chelsea need

In our view, Maresca saying that the season is a marathon not sprint theme reflects a manager who understands both the physical and psychological demands of a long Premier League campaign. Although some fans may be frustrated by recent results, the nuance is that Chelsea’s performances have been structurally strong — but lacking consistency in the final third.

From my experience covering Chelsea’s transitional seasons, this is the phase where patience becomes difficult but essential. Maresca is building patterns, partnerships and a clear identity. Rotating during a congested schedule is not a luxury; it’s a necessity.

too much rotation disrupts rhythm and chemistry. But Maresca is right that overuse now would cause bigger problems later.

Why experience is central to Maresca’s argument

Many of Chelsea’s key players are between 19 and 23 years old and have never navigated a Premier League title-chasing tempo. Maresca’s emphasis on experience is not an excuse — it’s a realistic assessment. Teams learn through setbacks, and Chelsea’s recent dropped points reflect learning moments, not structural failure.

  • Rotation is necessary to protect fitness and avoid long-term injuries.
  • Recent poor results do not indicate a mentality issue.
  • Chelsea’s core of 8–9 starters remains consistent in big matches.
  • Maresca believes experience will bring long-term consistency.

What’s Next

Chelsea host Everton at Stamford Bridge this afternoon, aiming to rediscover momentum after a challenging week. A win would not only stabilise their league position but also reinforce Maresca’s message: trust the process and build through the marathon.

They should win today there’s no excuses. But I doubt they’ll because they struggle against lowblock teams.
