Marcus Rashford has received a significant boost to his hopes of sealing a permanent Barcelona transfer, with the club publicly identifying him as a “key player” ahead of their crucial Copa del Rey second leg against Atlético Madrid.

The Manchester United loanee has contributed 10 goals and 13 assists across all competitions this season, re-establishing himself after a difficult period at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford Barcelona future gathers momentum

Rashford’s recent form was briefly interrupted by a minor knee issue that ruled him out of the 4-0 Copa del Rey semi-final first-leg defeat at Atlético Madrid. However, he is expected to return in La Liga action against Girona and could feature in the decisive second leg on 3 March.

In a clear show of faith, Barcelona’s official channels listed Rashford among three “key players” expected to be available for the return leg, alongside Pedri and Raphinha.

“The Englishman looks the most certain, having missed the first leg purely as a precaution,” the club stated.

That endorsement arrives amid growing clarity over his long-term situation.

Barcelona prepared to make permanent move

Barcelona hold an option to purchase Rashford outright for £26 million at the end of the season.

According to Spanish outlet SPORT, the Catalan side have decided internally to pursue a permanent deal. Two mechanisms are reportedly under discussion with Manchester United:

  • A reduced fee below the original buy option
  • A one-year loan extension with a mandatory purchase clause in 2027

Unless Rashford suffers a serious injury, Barcelona are said to favour completing the transfer this summer.

Having followed his adaptation closely, the 26-year-old appears more settled tactically under Hansi Flick. His role has not always been as a guaranteed starter, but his impact in decisive moments has strengthened his case.

Manchester United return unlikely

Speculation of a Manchester United return resurfaced following the departure of Ruben Amorim, who had previously marginalised Rashford.

However, the England international has made his stance clear.

“I’m enjoying this football club… for anybody who loves football, Barcelona is one of the key clubs in the history of the game,” Rashford said earlier this season.

“It’s not the first time I spoke with Barcelona about potentially coming here… now is my opportunity to make it happen.”

His comments strongly indicate that his future lies in Spain rather than a revival at Old Trafford.
