Marcus Rashford Barcelona transfer now a ‘matter of time’

Marcus Rashford's transfer negotiations are accelerating, with fresh reports in Spain suggesting a permanent exit from Manchester United is now a matter of timing rather than doubt.

The England forward joined Barcelona on loan last summer and has delivered 10 goals and 13 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions. His impact under Hansi Flick has convinced the Catalan club to pursue a permanent deal.

Sporting director Deco has already confirmed Barcelona hold a €30m purchase option. Crucially, there is no financial penalty if they choose not to activate it. However, current indications suggest the Spanish champions intend to proceed.

Earlier this week, Rashford’s agent Arturo Canales met with Deco, accompanied by intermediary Kostas Theoharides. The purpose of the meeting, according to reports in Spain, was to accelerate discussions and structure the financial terms required to finalise the deal.

Manchester United are refusing to reduce the €30m clause. That firm stance has forced Barcelona to explore alternative financial engineering rather than negotiating a lower fee.

Having monitored Barcelona’s recent transfer structures, spreading player wages over longer contracts has become a recurring strategy.

Rashford remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2028. Barcelona’s proposal reportedly centres on redistributing his current salary across a longer-term agreement to ease immediate wage pressure.

For example, rather than paying a higher annual figure over four years, the club would extend the duration and distribute the same total amount over five seasons. This method allows compliance with internal wage limits without breaching financial thresholds.

The forward is said to be fully committed to staying in Spain. He has reportedly indicated he does not wish to return to the Premier League, and especially not to Manchester United.

Fuel was added to speculation after Rashford posted an hourglass emoji alongside a photograph on social media. Spanish media interpreted it as a signal that a permanent move is simply a matter of time.

However, it remains subject to formal agreement and medical clearance at season’s end.

Barcelona are expected to continue negotiations in the coming weeks, aiming to finalise terms before the summer window formally opens. Unless unexpected complications arise, confirmation is likely at the end of the season. Much will depend on final wage structuring and compliance with internal salary frameworks.
