Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi has dropped a clear hint about his ambitions beyond this season, revealing that his focus remains firmly on European football rather than a return to Argentina.

The 28-year-old, who joined the Cherries from Feyenoord in 2022, has been ever-present for Andoni Iraola’s high-flying side this campaign. With his contract due to expire in 2026, speculation has swirled around his next move — but the Argentina international insists he’s staying focused on finishing the season strongly.

Speaking to TyC Sports, Senesi said: “I have one year left on my contract. I’d like to play in European tournaments again, but right now I’m focused on finishing the season well.”

Bournemouth currently sit fourth in the Premier League table — just one point behind Manchester City — and if they maintain that form, Senesi could yet realise his European dream without leaving the south coast.

Senesi shuts down Argentina return talk

“Returning to Argentina isn’t in my plans right now, but you never know in the future. It hurts me to see how San Lorenzo is doing. I hope they can get back on track soon.” — Marcos Senesi, TyC Sports

The former San Lorenzo academy graduate, who left his boyhood club in 2019, made clear that a move back home isn’t on his radar — at least not yet. Senesi had previously said he wanted to return one day, but his tone now suggests that goal has been shelved as he targets European competition with Bournemouth or elsewhere.

His emotional connection to San Lorenzo remains strong, but the lure of testing himself against Europe’s elite appears to be taking priority at this stage of his career.

Bournemouth’s rise and Senesi’s influence

Under Iraola, Bournemouth have evolved into one of the Premier League’s surprise packages, combining high pressing with composure in possession. Senesi’s consistency has been central to that success — the left-footed defender bringing both aggression and technical assurance to the back line.

Appearances 9
Assists 2
Tackles per game 1.8
Pass Accuracy 79%

Those numbers highlight why Senesi is attracting attention across Europe. Calm under pressure and capable of stepping into midfield, the Argentine fits perfectly in Iraola’s dynamic setup — and you can see why supporters want him to extend his stay.

Our View: Senesi has earned the right to aim high

In our view, Senesi’s ambition is completely justified. After nearly 100 Bournemouth appearances, he’s proven himself among the Premier League’s most reliable defenders outside the top six. His desire to play European football shows the mindset of a player still hungry to grow, not one content to coast.

If Bournemouth sustain their form and secure a Europa League or Conference League spot, that could persuade him to renew his contract — but if they fall short, expect interest from continental clubs next summer.

We believe Bournemouth should act quickly to extend his deal. Losing him on a free in 2026 would be a huge setback, especially given his influence both on and off the pitch. Whether in red and black or abroad, Senesi looks destined to feature on a European stage soon.

Key Insights

What’s Next for Bournemouth and Senesi

Bournemouth face Nottingham Forest tomorrow on Sunday as they look to tighten their grip on a top-four spot. Senesi’s form will be crucial in maintaining their defensive solidity during a challenging winter run that includes fixtures against Manchester City and Aston Villa.

For the player himself, contract talks are likely to resume early in 2026. If Bournemouth can deliver European qualification, Senesi may yet find the continental stage he craves — without leaving the Vitality Stadium.

👉 Should Bournemouth push to extend Marcos Senesi’s contract now, or risk losing him to a European giant next summer?

He’s gone then, won’t renew. I don’t think it’s anyone’s fault to be honest - don’t either think that Bournemouth thought he would do so well after losing Zab and Huijssen. It’s just pity to lose a player for free, because in today’s market you could easy get 30 mil for a player like that. Bournemouth could get a spot for European football, they’re playing very well so far this season. But I don’t think that’s enough for him - could player for any PL team, won’t be a starter for Arsenal or City, but will be for others if he continues to play like this
