Marco Silva has admitted he considers Fulham’s signing of Joao Palhinha and his subsequent sale to Bayern Munich as one of the best deals in the club’s history.

Fulham FC has been strategic in its transfer approach, particularly when it comes to signing Portuguese players. One notable example is the acquisition of João Palhinha, a move that has proven to be a smart investment for the club. However, as manager Marco Silva discussed, they must always approach such transfers with care, ensuring that they align with the club's long-term vision.

Palhinha's signing in 2022 was a crucial moment for Fulham. The Portuguese defensive midfielder joined from Sporting Clube de Portugal for €24.9 million. His impact on the pitch was immediate, with Palhinha making 79 appearances during his time at Fulham. His performances were widely regarded as exceptional, cementing his place as one of the top defensive midfielders in Europe.

However, Fulham was not only successful in getting the best out of Palhinha, but they also made a significant profit from his sale. In the summer of 2023, Bayern Munich secured his services for €51 million, marking a €26.1 million profit on Fulham's initial investment. This deal was a triumph for the club, as they not only benefited from Palhinha's contributions but also ensured that the profits were reinvested wisely to strengthen the squad further.

For a club of Fulham's stature, such lucrative transfers are rare but much desired. Marco Silva reflected on this particular deal, noting that it would go down in history as one of the club's best transfers, not only for the financial gain but also for the player's performances while at Craven Cottage.

The success of the Palhinha deal highlights Fulham's keen eye for talent and their ability to turn investments into long-term success, both on the pitch and in the transfer market. As the club continues to strengthen its squad, it’s clear that they will remain cautious but confident in their approach to transfers, especially when it comes to making smart signings like Palhinha, which benefit both the team and the financial future of the club.

Silva has been speaking to A Bola in a wide-ranging interview.

“It was one of the best deals in the club’s history,” he said.

“In the last three years, since I arrived at Fulham, in addition to the results obtained, we have made a huge turnaround, in all aspects, not only in the team dynamics, but also in the relationship with the fans, which was very low.

“And we ended the stigma of Fulham being considered a yo-yo club, because they were unable to consistently perform at the highest level in English football. Today it is recognized as a good Premier League club. This was clearly our biggest victory, but naturally we want more.”

its a good deal because fulham have replaced The best Defensive/tackler in the PL. for £50m Then used that money to buy 2+ players one being Sander Berger for £25m and change the way the Central midfield plays/progresses the football. #giveandtake

I agree, it was the best deal we had. Berger has been outstanding, so well done.
