Marco Palestra has revealed he is only a few days away from returning to fitness as he continues to wait for his Premier League debut with Chelsea.
The 21-year-old arrived from Atalanta during the summer after Chelsea moved decisively to beat Inter Milan and several other interested clubs to his signature.
Palestra featured regularly during pre-season under Xabi Alonso, but a fitness problem has prevented him from appearing in Chelsea's opening Premier League matches.
Palestra says Chelsea return is close
Speaking to Sky Italia at the Gran Gala del Calcio ceremony, Palestra delivered a positive update on his recovery.
“I'm fine, it's still a few days away, but I feel much better,” he said.
That should provide encouragement that his competitive Chelsea debut is approaching after an interrupted beginning to life at Stamford Bridge.
The Italian has nevertheless enjoyed his first months in England and credited Alonso and his new teammates with making the transition considerably easier.
“From day one, Coach Xabi Alonso and my teammates have made me feel great,” Palestra explained. “A lot has changed, but I like everything here.”
Palestra is also realistic about the competition he faces for regular football.
Asked about becoming a starter, he refused to make demands over his position and acknowledged the strength of Chelsea's squad.
Palestra could suit Alonso's system
His return will provide Alonso with another versatile option capable of operating in the wing-back roles that are important to the Spaniard's system.
Palestra's athleticism and ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch should make him a natural candidate for that position once he is fully fit.
His involvement throughout pre-season also means he has already had an opportunity to understand Alonso's tactical requirements before his injury setback.
Palestra also remains ambitious at international level and believes Italy have the quality to achieve significant success.
“We have a wonderful group,” he said. “I'm sure that by working together, we can achieve great things.”
For Chelsea, however, the immediate priority is getting their summer signing fully fit and finally available for competitive action.
