Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi offered an honest post-match assessment following his side’s 5-0 defeat to Newcastle United — a result that further strengthens the Magpies’ Champions League push while placing added scrutiny on Palace’s defensive struggles.

The England international, who has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle in the past, unfortunately scored an own goal during the first half at St James’ Park. The incident came just two minutes after Eberechi Eze had missed a penalty to equalise, as Guehi turned a low cross from Harvey Barnes into his own net.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle, Guehi made no excuses for the performance.
“It was tough. Newcastle were definitely the better team. They showed their class from minute one, so it's important that we learn from this and move on.”

The defender was clear that Palace’s collapse had nothing to do with the missed penalty.
“It was right from the beginning. You could just tell they were the better team. It's got nothing to do with the penalty. That happens — it’s football.”

“We spoke before the game about energy and winning your duels and getting up to people, so I don't think we did ourselves justice with that today. We have a quick turnaround, because we've got Bournemouth at the weekend.”

“Our mindset is that we have no excuses. We all take responsibility. We all have to look ourselves in the mirror and make sure that we're better next time.”

Newcastle, meanwhile, were clinical in their approach — racing to a four-goal lead by half-time with strikes from Jacob Murphy, Barnes, and Fabian Schär. Alexander Isak added a fifth on the hour mark. The win was Newcastle’s sixth in a row in all competitions and lifted them to third in the table.
Palace had only lost two of their previous 15 away matches prior to kick-off, but this heavy defeat raised questions about their defensive resilience — particularly with speculation continuing over Guehi’s long-term future.

With his contract expiring in 2026 and Palace reportedly struggling to tie him down to a new deal, Newcastle may revisit their interest this summer. Given his age, Premier League experience, and England caps, Guehi remains one of the most sought-after centre-backs outside the traditional top six.

Marc Guehi will have a 12 month contract left after this season, is it time to sell him in the summer?
