Manchester United host Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Boxing Day in a significant Premier League test for Ruben Amorim, with pressure mounting after another frustrating week.

United arrive off the back of two disappointing results — a 4-4 draw away to Bournemouth followed by defeat at Aston Villa — extending their poor home run. The Red Devils have not won at Old Trafford since October, making Friday night’s fixture an important moment in Amorim’s early tenure.

Team news: Fernandes absence forces reshuffle

Ruben Amorim must cope without captain Bruno Fernandes, who misses out after sustaining a hamstring injury against Aston Villa. His absence removes United’s primary creative force and leadership figure.

There are no changes expected in goal, with Senne Lammens set to continue between the posts. United’s back three is also likely to remain unchanged, with Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven expected to start once again. Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt both remain sidelined.

At wing-back, Patrick Dorgu is expected to keep his place on the left after impressing at Villa Park, while Diogo Dalot should start on the right with Noussair Mazraoui unavailable due to Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Midfield and attacking options

Fernandes’ injury complicates United’s midfield selection. Lisandro Martínez partnered Manuel Ugarte effectively in the second half against Villa, but the Argentine is still being carefully managed following a long-term knee injury and has not started a match since February.

As a result, Casemiro could be recalled after serving a one-match suspension, particularly with Kobbie Mainoo also unavailable. That would offer greater physical presence against a Newcastle midfield known for intensity and pressing.

Further forward, Amorim is expected to stick with Mason Mount, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško. Mount’s off-ball work has been a consistent positive, while Cunha represents United’s most reliable goal threat with Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Fernandes all unavailable.

Šeško continues to search for form, having not scored since early October, but Joshua Zirkzee has also struggled for consistency and Amorim appears inclined to persist with the Slovenian.

What’s next?

With the festive schedule compressed, United cannot afford further dropped points at home. Newcastle’s physicality and pressing will test Amorim’s developing system, particularly without Fernandes orchestrating play. A positive result would ease pressure and restore belief heading into the New Year, while defeat would deepen concerns about United’s home form and squad depth.

Having followed United closely this season, the coming fixtures may define whether Amorim’s ideas take hold quickly or require patience amid mounting injuries.

Can Manchester United finally deliver a home win, or will Newcastle expose their injury-hit lineup?
