Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a smash-and-grab 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, thanks to Riccardo Calafiori’s scrappy first-half goal.

United manager Ruben Amorim’s bold decision to start Altay Bayindir in goal backfired within 13 minutes. With Andre Onana sidelined by a hamstring injury and veteran Tom Heaton overlooked, Bayindir was caught on his line as Declan Rice’s curling corner swung under the bar. The Turkish keeper flapped weakly at the delivery, diverting the ball straight onto Calafiori, who bundled in from close range.

The hosts dominated for long spells, registering 22 shots to Arsenal’s nine and racking up more possession, but could not find a way past David Raya. The Spanish keeper denied debutants Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo with a string of fine saves to preserve Arsenal’s lead.

Arsenal’s Clinical Edge

Riccardo Calafiori, one of the summer’s big defensive recruits, had the decisive touch. Mikel Arteta’s side had fewer opportunities but carried their trademark resilience, soaking up pressure and striking at the right time.

Declan Rice nearly doubled the advantage with a late free-kick, but Arsenal’s focus was on defensive organisation — and Raya’s outstanding shot-stopping display.

United’s Frustration

Despite the defeat, United showed promise under Amorim. New signings added urgency and mobility, and their attacking threat was clear. Cunha, Mbeumo, and Rashford all forced stops from Raya, while Bruno Fernandes dictated midfield.

But the goalkeeper question overshadowed everything. Bayindir’s costly hesitation proved decisive and underlined why some fans had expected a new arrival during the £200m summer rebuild.

Analyst Verdict

Arsenal’s ability to win without playing well is becoming a trademark — and Calafiori’s debut goal will only build momentum. Raya’s performance reminded why Arteta trusts him so deeply.

For United, the signs of progress under Amorim are clear in attack, but defensive lapses and uncertainty in goal are concerning. From reviewing the match, United pressed effectively and carved chances, but finishing and goalkeeping separated them from a result.

Key Insights

What’s Next

United must regroup quickly before facing Fulham away, with questions already circling about Amorim’s decision not to sign a new keeper. Whether Onana can return to fitness in time will be crucial.

Arsenal host Leeds United at the Emirates next weekend, looking to build on their early momentum. With Calafiori opening his account and Raya in inspired form, Arteta’s side will be confident of back-to-back wins.

Should Amorim stick with Bayindir — or move for a new goalkeeper before the transfer window closes?
