Manchester United strengthened their push for Champions League qualification with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford, with Bruno Fernandes once again proving decisive.

The Portuguese captain produced two assists to reach a landmark 100 assists for the club in all competitions, helping Michael Carrick’s side move three points clear of their direct rivals in the race for a top-four finish.

Bruno Fernandes reaches assist milestone for Manchester United

Fernandes was the central figure in United’s attacking play throughout the match and played a decisive role in the second half.

His corner early in the second period was headed home by Casemiro to give the hosts the lead in front of the Stretford End.

Later in the match, Fernandes produced a perfectly weighted pass that allowed Matheus Cunha to restore Manchester United’s advantage after Aston Villa had equalised.

The assists also carried historical significance, as Fernandes moved onto 16 Premier League assists this season, surpassing David Beckham’s previous club record of 15 set during the 1999–2000 campaign.

Casemiro opens the scoring before Villa respond

Manchester United controlled much of the early play but struggled to find a breakthrough in the first half.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez made an important save to deny Amad Diallo following a dangerous move involving Harry Maguire.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 53rd minute when Casemiro met Fernandes’ corner with a near-post header that flew across goal.

The Brazilian midfielder celebrated passionately with supporters, who responded by chanting for him to stay at the club beyond the end of the season.

Villa eventually found their response midway through the second half.

Lucas Digne delivered a dangerous ball into the area and Ross Barkley struck it cleanly to bring Unai Emery’s side level after a lengthy VAR check confirmed the goal would stand.

Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko seal victory

Manchester United regained control shortly after the equaliser thanks to another moment of brilliance from Fernandes.

The captain showed excellent composure before slipping a perfectly timed pass into the path of Matheus Cunha, who finished calmly past Martinez to restore the lead.

Aston Villa struggled to create further opportunities after falling behind again, and United eventually sealed the result late in the game.

Substitute Benjamin Sesko reacted quickly to a loose ball in the penalty area before firing an effort that deflected off Tyrone Mings and into the net.
