Confidence is growing that Manchester City youngster Oscar Bobb could benefit from a move away from the Etihad Stadium, with a transfer to a major European club now being openly backed as a “great solution” for his development.

The discussion comes amid strong indications in the British press that Manchester City are closing in on a move for Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo — a deal that could further limit Bobb’s pathway to regular first-team football.

Semenyo link raises questions for Bobb

Semenyo’s potential arrival would add another attacking option to Pep Guardiola’s squad and inevitably impact minutes for fringe attackers. Bobb has featured nine times in the Premier League this season but remains on the periphery despite his evident technical quality.

That situation has led to renewed debate in Norway about the 22-year-old’s next step. Speaking to TV2, journalist Simen Stamsø-Møller strongly endorsed the idea of Bobb leaving City in search of consistent football.

“Absolutely brilliant, sounds like a great solution,” he said. “There are several reasons for this. First and foremost for Oscar Bobb’s own part.”

Development over comfort

Stamsø-Møller argued that while Bobb has gained valuable experience at City, his development now requires regular minutes at a high level — something difficult to guarantee under Guardiola.

“He has experienced a lot and come a long way, but has a lot left to prove and probably some development left,” he explained. “He gets that by playing steadily at as high a level as possible.”

One destination in particular stood out.

Borussia Dortmund seen as ideal fit

Borussia Dortmund were highlighted as an ideal next step, with their reputation for nurturing young attacking talent cited as a major factor.

“I think Borussia Dortmund will suit him very well,” Stamsø-Møller said. “They are known for taking care of their players and developing them. It is a worse league, but he gets to develop more athletically. I see the most advantages in this.”

The Bundesliga’s emphasis on intensity, transitions and youth development has often provided a platform for players to accelerate their growth — something Bobb may struggle to achieve with sporadic appearances in England.

The journalist also noted the wider implications beyond club football.

“But a move to Dortmund could also prove to be a perfect solution for the Norwegian national team,” he added.

City youngster at a crossroads

Despite limited starts, Bobb’s résumé is already impressive. He has made 47 senior appearances for Manchester City across competitions, contributing seven goals, and has also found the net twice for Norway at international level.

Those numbers underline that Bobb can operate at the highest level. However, having followed City closely this season, his role has felt increasingly static — trusted, but not central.

From City’s perspective, a sale would also make financial sense. As a homegrown academy product, any transfer fee would represent pure profit, potentially helping to offset the cost of a move for Semenyo or other January reinforcements.

However, it remains too early to draw firm conclusions. Much will depend on City’s recruitment plans, Bobb’s own ambitions, and whether Dortmund — or another European giant — formalise their interest.

Key insights

  • Oscar Bobb has played nine Premier League matches this season
  • Manchester City are strongly linked with Antoine Semenyo
  • Norwegian media believe a move would aid Bobb’s development
  • Borussia Dortmund are viewed as an ideal destination
  • A sale would represent pure profit for City

What’s next?

January could prove decisive for Bobb’s career trajectory. If City press ahead with attacking reinforcements, the case for a loan or permanent exit will strengthen. Dortmund’s long-standing interest in young, technical attackers makes them a logical suitor, but competition for his signature could grow quickly if City open the door.

Should Manchester City cash in on Oscar Bobb now, or does he still have a long-term future for Manchester City?
