Manchester United’s injury list has grown again ahead of a defining week in the race for Champions League qualification, with Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire emerging as fresh doubts following the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Michael Carrick’s side sit third in the Premier League but now face a crucial trip to Newcastle on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, before hosting Aston Villa on Sunday, 8 March 2026. Defensive availability could heavily shape both fixtures.

Manchester United injury update ahead of Newcastle clash

Shaw and Maguire were both withdrawn during the victory over Palace, and Carrick confirmed post-match that neither was fully fit.

With Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt already sidelined, United’s defensive depth is under strain at a pivotal stage of the campaign.

Luke Shaw – fitness concern after early withdrawal

Shaw lasted just 24 minutes against Palace after appearing to catch a stud on the top of his left boot during a challenge with Daniel Muñoz.

He attempted to continue but was eventually replaced by Noussair Mazraoui.

Carrick’s immediate update was brief. “Just wasn’t feeling too well so hopefully he will be feeling better soon.”

At this stage, his availability for Newcastle remains uncertain.

Potential return: To be assessed

Harry Maguire – played through discomfort

Maguire completed 85 minutes before being substituted. Carrick later revealed the England defender had not been fully comfortable.

“Just wasn’t feeling too well, so hopefully he will be feeling better soon.”

A clearer update is expected during Tuesday’s pre-match press conference.

Potential return: To be assessed

Mason Mount closing in on comeback

Mount has not featured since a brief appearance in the Manchester derby last month after sustaining a training-ground injury.

Encouragingly, the midfielder has returned to first-team training.

“Mason is getting closer. He’s on the grass and looking at being around it pretty soon. We’re just having to be patient.”

From the recent sessions covered, Mount appears to be building match fitness steadily, though immediate involvement against Newcastle may come too soon.

Potential return: 15 March 2026 vs Aston Villa (H)

Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt

Martinez continues to recover from a calf issue sustained earlier this month. Carrick described him as “close” but stopped short of confirming a timeline.

Newcastle may arrive too quickly, though a return against Villa next weekend is plausible.

De Ligt remains the longer-term absence. The Dutch defender has not trained fully since November due to a persistent back problem.

Carrick acknowledged the difficulty in predicting his return. “It’s a difficult one to pin down a timeline. He’s improving but we can’t give more at this stage.”

Patrick Dorgu – targeting spring return

Dorgu suffered a hamstring tear just as he was beginning to establish himself under Carrick.

Early estimates suggested around ten weeks out. Denmark national team head coach Brian Reimer recently indicated March or early April could be realistic.

Potential return: March / April 2026

What this means for United

Having followed United’s defensive setup in recent matches, Carrick has relied heavily on stability at centre-back. With Shaw and Maguire now uncertain, structural consistency may be tested against Newcastle’s attacking intensity.

However, Mount’s impending return provides a boost further forward, potentially offering renewed creativity during the season’s decisive stretch.

Much will depend on the next 72 hours of medical assessments.
