Man United explore two transfer routes for RB Leipzig midfielder Eljif Elmas

Manchester United could have a clear opportunity to sign Eljif Elmas this summer as uncertainty grows around Napoli’s plans to make his loan move permanent.

The North Macedonia international has impressed during his season in Naples after joining on loan from RB Leipzig. His performances have attracted attention across Europe, with Manchester United among the clubs monitoring the midfielder’s situation.

Reports in Italy suggest the Premier League side could have two possible routes to secure a deal.

Napoli currently hold an option to sign Elmas permanently for around €16 million. In the current transfer market, that figure is widely considered relatively modest for an experienced and versatile midfielder.

However, according to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Napoli are not yet certain they will activate the clause.

The Italian club are reportedly evaluating their finances and could attempt to negotiate a lower price with RB Leipzig rather than triggering the agreed option.

If Napoli decide against activating their purchase option, Elmas would return to RB Leipzig at the end of the season.

In that scenario, Manchester United could negotiate directly with the Bundesliga club for a permanent transfer.

RB Leipzig originally paid Napoli around €24 million to sign the midfielder in 2024. His accounting value has since decreased to approximately €12 million, meaning the German club could still generate a profit even if they sell him close to the €16 million mark.

Alternatively, Leipzig could maintain their current valuation and allow interested clubs to negotiate directly rather than lowering their demands to satisfy Napoli.

Elmas has developed a reputation as a flexible midfield option capable of performing in several roles.

During his time in Italy, the 26 year old has played both as a deeper central midfielder and in more advanced attacking positions. Earlier in his career at Napoli he also appeared on the flanks under former manager Luciano Spalletti.

That tactical flexibility has made him an appealing option for clubs looking to add depth across multiple midfield roles.

Manchester United, who have faced ongoing midfield selection issues this season, are understood to be assessing potential options ahead of the summer window.
