Lutsharel Geertruida's search for a new club has become more complicated after a potential return to Feyenoord reportedly disappeared following Robin van Persie's departure from the Dutch side.

The Sunderland loanee is expected to leave RB Leipzig permanently this summer, but one of the most logical destinations available to him now appears to have been removed from consideration.

According to reports in the Netherlands, Geertruida had been open to returning to Feyenoord and had already discussed the possibility with Van Persie before the manager's dismissal.

The development leaves the defender facing a crucial summer as he weighs up the next stage of his career.

Feyenoord return had been under consideration

Dutch outlet De Telegraaf reports that Geertruida spent time speaking with Van Persie about his future in recent weeks.

The 25-year-old was present at an international youth football tournament organised by the former Feyenoord coach and reportedly discussed potential plans away from RB Leipzig.

A return to Rotterdam would have represented a natural move for the defender.

Geertruida came through Feyenoord's academy system and made 202 senior appearances for the club before departing for Germany. His strong connection to the Eredivisie side made a reunion a realistic possibility, particularly with Van Persie in charge.

However, the manager's departure has significantly altered the situation.

According to the report, Feyenoord are no longer viewed as a realistic option following the coaching change.

Sunderland opted against permanent move

Geertruida spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Sunderland and was a regular figure in the squad throughout the season.

The Dutch international made 30 appearances for the Black Cats, providing versatility across the defensive line and midfield when required.

Despite that involvement, Sunderland have reportedly decided not to pursue a permanent deal.

That decision leaves RB Leipzig searching for a buyer while the player evaluates the opportunities available elsewhere.

Having followed Sunderland's recruitment strategy in recent seasons, the club have generally been selective when converting loan deals into permanent transfers, particularly where significant transfer fees or wages are involved.

Liverpool possibility also faded

The Feyenoord setback is not the only potential route that appears to have closed.

Reports suggest Geertruida had also been viewed as a player who could potentially reunite with former Feyenoord boss Arne Slot at Liverpool.

That scenario has become far less likely following Slot's departure from Anfield, removing another familiar connection that may have influenced the defender's next move.

While no concrete Liverpool move had materialised, the managerial changes at both club

While Sunderland opted against making the move permanent, the season provided Geertruida with regular football and helped maintain his visibility ahead of an important summer.

However, it remains unclear which clubs are prepared to make a formal approach.

Key Points

  • Feyenoord reportedly considered bringing Geertruida back.
  • Robin van Persie's departure has changed those plans.
  • Sunderland will not sign the defender permanently.
  • RB Leipzig are open to selling him this summer.
  • A potential Liverpool connection has also weakened.

What’s Next

For now, Geertruida's immediate focus will be on the World Cup after receiving a late call-up to the Netherlands squad following Jurriën Timber's injury.

The tournament could prove significant for his future. Strong performances on the international stage would likely increase interest from clubs across Europe and potentially create options beyond those previously discussed.

Once the World Cup concludes, attention is expected to return quickly to transfer negotiations as RB Leipzig look to resolve the defender's future before the new season begins.

Has Geertruida been unlucky with managerial changes, or could the World Cup open an even bigger opportunity than Feyenoord ever offered?
