Luka Vušković Tottenham summer return is firmly on the agenda, with Hamburg officials admitting there is “no chance” of keeping the defender beyond his current loan spell.
The 18-year-old centre-back joined Hamburg SV on a season-long loan last summer and has since emerged as one of the standout performers in the 2. Bundesliga. He has logged 1,920 minutes across 24 appearances, earning praise for his composure and maturity.
Despite local hopes of an extended stay, the situation appears clear.
Luka Vušković Tottenham summer return confirmed by Hamburg
Hamburg sporting director Claus Costa told Sport1 that the German club have no contractual mechanism to retain the Croatia international.
“Contractually, there’s no chance he’ll stay. It’s purely a loan, and we have no way to tie Luka to HSV long-term,” Costa said.
Hamburg manager Merlin Polzin had previously expressed a desire to keep the teenager, but no purchase option or obligation was included in the agreement with Tottenham.
Former Spurs midfielder Steffen Freund, also speaking to Sport1, reinforced the expectation that Vušković will return to north London.
“Tottenham will definitely bring him back. He’s playing so well. I can’t imagine HSV has a chance of keeping him. He’s too good for HSV,” Freund said.
Development and future decision
Vušković has publicly stated he will assess his future at the end of the season. There has also been discussion around the prospect of playing alongside his brother Mario at Hamburg, though the latter is currently serving a doping ban until November.
Costa acknowledged the emotional element but stressed the practical limitations.
“Of course, there’s this romantic notion that Luka will one day play alongside his brother Mario,” he said.
Having followed Tottenham’s defensive planning under Igor Tudor, integrating a high-performing young centre-back into pre-season preparations would align with long-term squad building. However, it remains too early to determine whether Vušković will feature immediately in the Premier League or head out on another loan.
