Luka Vušković delays Tottenham decision and follows Harry Kane blueprint

Tottenham youngster Luka Vušković has insisted there is no rush to resolve his future, revealing he will wait until after the World Cup before making a decision — while openly drawing inspiration from Harry Kane’s early career path.

The highly rated defender, currently on loan at Hamburger SV, has been one of the standout performers in Germany this season and is attracting growing attention as his temporary spell away from Spurs nears its end.

Speaking in an interview with SportBILD, the 18-year-old made it clear that discussions over his next move can wait. Despite his rapid progress, Vušković believes patience is key.

“We’ll decide after the World Cup what happens next, what’s best for me,” he said.

Tottenham sent the centre-back to Hamburger SV to accelerate his development, and the plan has worked. Vušković has established himself as a key figure in the Bundesliga side’s defence, collecting individual recognition along the way.

His loan deal expires in the summer, leaving Spurs with a decision to make.

Vušković has not hidden his preference. He would like to remain at Hamburg for another season, ideally playing alongside his brother Mario. However, that scenario is complicated by Mario Vušković’s suspension, which runs until November next year.

Any extension would therefore require Tottenham’s approval — and Spurs may have different ideas.

With uncertainty surrounding the future of Micky van de Ven, Vušković could be viewed as a potential internal replacement at Tottenham Hotspur, or alternatively be sent out on a third successive loan to continue his gradual integration.

For now, the club have remained deliberately non-committal.

One influence stands out above all others: Harry Kane.

Hamburg face Bayern Munich this weekend, meaning Vušković will come up directly against the former Spurs captain — a moment he has been preparing for in detail.

“I watch videos of him, how he scores, how he moves, how he behaves in challenges,” Vušković explained. “If you’re not paying attention for even a second, Harry Kane will ruthlessly exploit that moment.”

Beyond the immediate challenge, Kane’s early career path resonates strongly with the young defender.

“He had his phases to learn how to play,” Vušković said. “Every step he took was right for him and his career. In the end, he became an incredible striker.”

Having followed Tottenham’s loan strategy closely in recent seasons, Vušković’s stance aligns with a growing trend among elite prospects: prioritising minutes, development and timing over prestige.

However, it remains too early to draw firm conclusions. Much will depend on Tottenham’s defensive planning, HSV’s league status and how Vušković performs on the international stage over the summer.

What is clear is that the player himself is thinking long-term — and refusing to be rushed.

Vušković’s immediate focus remains on finishing the season strongly with Hamburg, starting with a major test against Bayern Munich. Tottenham are expected to revisit his situation once the campaign and the World Cup conclude, when squad needs and development pathways are clearer. Any decision is likely to be taken with a long-term view rather than short-term convenience.
