Liverpool FC could have a future transfer headache on their hands after Hungary head coach Marco Rossi revealed that Dominik Szoboszlai has long harboured a dream of playing for Real Madrid.

Szoboszlai has arguably been Liverpool’s standout performer under Arne Slot this season, contributing 10 goals and seven assists in all competitions. He was back among the goals at the weekend, scoring in the 3-0 FA Cup win over Brighton & Hove Albion after serving a suspension.

Hungary boss drops Real Madrid claim

According to reports in Spain, Rossi admitted that the 25-year-old has always held ambitions of one day playing at the Santiago Bernabéu.

“Szoboszlai always had one dream: to play for Real Madrid,” Rossi is quoted as saying. “I don't know if he'll be able to take that step, because the decision depends on him and also on his club.”

Given the close relationship between Rossi and his captain, the comments are unlikely to be dismissed lightly.

Contract talks ongoing at Anfield

Szoboszlai is under contract at Anfield until 2028, and he confirmed last month that discussions have taken place over a potential extension.

“There is always progress, but no decision has been made,” he said recently. “Of course, I am happy here, but you know how football works.”

That measured response will do little to quiet speculation, particularly with Real Madrid’s continued policy of targeting elite talent across Europe.

Why Liverpool will be wary

Liverpool supporters have recent experience of losing key players to Madrid. Trent Alexander-Arnold departed last summer, while Ibrahima Konaté has also been linked with a move to Spain.

Szoboszlai’s influence under Slot makes him even more critical to Liverpool’s rebuild. His energy, long-range shooting and creativity have been central to a campaign that has otherwise lacked consistency.

If Real Madrid were to formalise interest, it would test both the player’s ambition and Liverpool’s resolve.

Key Insight

  • Real Madrid have history of targeting key Reds stars
  • Marco Rossi publicly confirms Szoboszlai’s “Real Madrid dream”
  • Liverpool already in contract talks with the midfielder

What’s next?

For now, Szoboszlai remains fully focused on Liverpool’s season. Contract talks are ongoing, and there is no formal approach from Madrid.

But with two-and-a-half years left on his current deal, this is the kind of storyline that could quietly gather momentum heading into the summer window.

Liverpool may need to move decisively on a renewal to shut the door before it ever opens.
