Liverpool have been handed a much-needed lift ahead of their Premier League clash with Aston Villa, after Unai Emery confirmed two fresh absentees from his squad for the trip to Anfield.
Villa travel north in outstanding form, having won four league games in a row, but they will be without several key players as they look to secure their first win at Anfield since 2014.
Buendia Ruled Out, Elliott Ineligible
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Emery revealed that Emiliano Buendia will miss the match after being forced off early in Villa’s 2–1 victory over Manchester City last weekend.
“He is not available for tomorrow, but the injury he has is going well,” Emery said. “I think with a few days more, he can be fit and available for the next matches, hopefully.” — Unai Emery, Aston Villa manager
The absence of Buendia — who had recently rediscovered form after a long-term knee injury — is a setback for Villa, though Emery suggested his return is only a matter of days away.
The manager also confirmed that Harvey Elliott, on loan from Liverpool, will not feature as he is ineligible to face his parent club.
That omission is unlikely to cause major disruption, however, as Elliott has struggled for game time this season, making just two starts in all competitions and a five-minute cameo against Feyenoord earlier this month.
Tielemans Close to Return
In more positive news for Villa, Emery confirmed that Youri Tielemans is nearing a return to full fitness after a spell on the sidelines. The Belgian midfielder could resume full training next week, offering a boost ahead of a busy November schedule.
“Youri Tielemans is progressing well. He is going to start training hopefully next week with the group,” Emery explained. “The other one is Andrés. Andrés is progressively getting better, but still some weeks to come back.” — Unai Emery
The mention of Andrés García, another long-term absentee, confirms the Spanish defender remains out for several more weeks as he continues his recovery.
Liverpool Desperate for a Response
While Villa’s absences are notable, the greater pressure lies on Arne Slot and Liverpool. The Reds are in dire need of a positive result, having lost six of their last seven matches in all competitions.
Their latest defeat — a 3–0 Carabao Cup exit at Crystal Palace — has intensified scrutiny around Slot’s tactics and team selection. Facing one of the league’s most in-form sides, the Dutchman will hope Villa’s fitness concerns help his team regain some confidence at home.
Our View: An Opportunity for Slot, a Test for Emery
In our view, the timing of Villa’s mini injury crisis gives Liverpool a small advantage heading into Sunday’s clash. Emery’s system thrives on continuity and cohesion, and losing Buendia’s creativity could blunt their transitions — especially against a high-pressing Liverpool side desperate to react.
Still, Villa’s confidence and organisation under Emery mean they’ll fancy their chances of extending Liverpool’s slump if they start well at Anfield.

It won't be a surprise but I do think that Villa will win actually - Buendia has been doing great this season, so unfortunately he won't be playing.
