New Chelsea striker Liam Delap has been left out of England’s Under-21 squad for this summer’s European Championship, fuelling speculation that he will form part of Chelsea’s squad for the Club World Cup, which begins in less than two weeks.

The 21-year-old forward recently completed a £30m move from Ipswich Town after the Tractor Boys were relegated from the Premier League. Despite interest from multiple top-flight clubs, Chelsea sealed the deal with a five-year contract, and now Delap looks set to take part in the club's first global tournament of the 2025/26 season.

Delap’s England Snub Points to Club Commitment

Delap’s omission from Lee Carsley’s U21 squad has raised eyebrows, as the striker had been a regular for the Young Lions, with 12 caps and a goal on his debut against Luxembourg in 2023.

However, with the U21 Euros clashing with the FIFA Club World Cup, his absence is now being interpreted as a strategic decision to allow him to integrate immediately at Chelsea. His participation in the Club World Cup is not officially confirmed, but signs point toward involvement.

Chelsea’s Latest No9: Pressure and Promise

Delap will wear the No9 shirt at Chelsea, a number that has developed a notorious reputation at Stamford Bridge due to underperformance by previous strikers. The young forward, however, remains confident and focused on success.

“Growing up watching this club, I understand the stature of it… I wanted to come here to win trophies.” — Liam Delap

England U21s Still Packed with Talent

Even without Delap, England’s U21 squad remains stacked. Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri, Manchester City’s James McAtee, and Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott and Jarell Quansah are all included, along with Tino Livramento, Elliot Anderson, and Jobe Bellingham.

What’s Next?

Delap’s arrival and potential Club World Cup involvement underline Chelsea’s intent to build a new attacking core early in the season. With European competition and global fixtures on the horizon, Delap could be handed the perfect stage to prove himself immediately in blue.

Is Delap ready to lead the Chelsea line, or is the No9 shirt once again a risk? Drop your thoughts and share this with your fellow fans.
