Leon Bailey’s troubled loan spell in Italy has taken another damaging turn, with fresh reports suggesting his time at Roma could end far earlier than planned. Just weeks after bold claims from his father and agent Craig Butler, the Aston Villa winger has suffered yet another injury — prompting sharp criticism from the Italian media.
Back in October, Butler confidently hyped Bailey’s return to fitness, urging fans to “get the popcorn ready” as the Jamaican prepared to make his mark in Serie A. Instead, the opposite has unfolded.
Another setback compounds Roma frustration
Bailey was introduced from the bench during Roma’s recent 2-1 defeat to Juventus, but his involvement was short-lived. The 26-year-old was forced off soon after coming on, sustaining what is now his third significant injury since arriving in Rome.
To date, Bailey has managed just 181 minutes of Serie A football, spending considerably more time in the treatment room than on the pitch. Italian newspaper Il Tempo, via TuttoASRoma, were unsparing in their assessment, sarcastically declaring that the much-hyped “popcorn has expired”.
That line neatly sums up the mood around the player’s spell at AS Roma, where patience appears to be wearing thin.
Option to buy now in serious doubt
Roma committed around €3m to secure Bailey on loan from Aston Villa, with the agreement also including a €20m option to buy. However, there is now growing belief in Italy that this clause will not be activated.
From my experience following Serie A closely, clubs are generally ruthless when it comes to fitness reliability — especially with loan players. Bailey’s repeated setbacks have made it almost impossible for him to build rhythm, let alone justify a permanent move at that valuation.
Italian outlet Il Romanista goes even further, claiming Bailey could return to Birmingham as early as January. They add that even when available, the winger has failed to convince Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini.
A move that never took off
Bailey’s latest injury against Juventus is being described as the “epilogue” to a story that never truly began. Expectations were modest but hopeful when the loan was agreed, yet the combination of physical fragility and limited impact has derailed any momentum.
There is, however, a counterpoint worth considering. Bailey’s explosive style relies heavily on sharpness and confidence — two things almost impossible to regain amid constant interruptions. A reset back in the Premier League, familiar surroundings, and a clearer medical plan may yet offer him a chance to revive his career.
What this means for Villa
For Aston Villa, Bailey’s potential January return presents both a headache and an opportunity. His wages and squad place would need reassessing, but his return could also provide depth during a congested second half of the season. Whether Villa see him as an asset to reintegrate or a player to move on quickly will be one of their more delicate winter decisions.
