Leeds United have emerged as a potential suitor for FC Porto winger Danny Namaso, with reports suggesting his representatives are using the Africa Cup of Nations to raise his profile ahead of a possible transfer.
According to Africa Foot, Leeds United are monitoring the situation of Danny Namaso, who is currently on loan at AJ Auxerre from FC Porto.
AFCON exposure driving interest
Namaso joined Auxerre on loan last August, with the Ligue 1 side securing an option to buy. The 25-year-old has recorded two goals and one assist in 14 appearances this season, modest numbers that have nonetheless been enough to keep him on the radar.
Africa Foot claim fresh interest has been sparked by his involvement with Cameroon national team at the ongoing AFCON. While Namaso has yet to register a goal or assist at the tournament, his overall performances are said to have caught the eye of clubs across Europe — particularly in England, Spain and France.
Leeds are the only English club named in the report, though there is a sense that his agent may be leveraging the AFCON spotlight to elevate the player’s market value.
Competition from across Europe
Leeds are not alone in tracking the winger. The report states that Real Betis are also keeping close tabs on Namaso, while AS Monaco and OGC Nice have joined the race.
Despite his Porto contract running until 2028 — and reportedly containing an €80m release clause — the reality is far more modest.
Cut-price deal possible
Auxerre’s loan agreement includes a €5m purchase option, and Africa Foot report that Porto would be willing to negotiate a permanent transfer for a similar fee. Any move from Leeds or another club would depend on Auxerre choosing not to activate that clause.
At this stage, it remains unclear whether Daniel Farke’s side are considering a January move or are instead positioning themselves for the summer window.
Familiar pathway to England
Namaso was born in England and came through the academy system at Reading before moving to Porto in 2020. A return to English football could therefore appeal, particularly if Leeds see him as a cost-effective attacking option with resale potential.
What’s next?
Much hinges on Auxerre’s intentions and whether AFCON interest translates into concrete offers. If the Ligue 1 club decline to buy, Leeds could find themselves with an opportunity to strike a relatively low-risk deal.
Would Danny Namaso be smart depth for Leeds — or is this AFCON hype outweighing his club form?
