Champions League club add Leeds United midfielder to transfer wishlist

Leeds United midfielder Ao Tanaka has emerged as a potential target for Galatasaray as the Turkish champions continue their search for a new central midfielder.

The Super Lig side are assessing options amid uncertainty surrounding Gabriel Sara’s future, with the Brazilian attracting interest from several clubs in England after his move from Norwich City. Leeds have been credited with interest in Sara, alongside other Premier League sides, adding further intrigue to Galatasaray’s midfield plans.

Earlier this month, the Istanbul club had been heavily linked with Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte. Personal terms were reportedly agreed while the Uruguayan struggled for minutes under Ruben Amorim. However, following the managerial change at Old Trafford, Ugarte now appears set to remain in Manchester, forcing Galatasaray to look elsewhere.

According to Fanatik, Tanaka has now been added to Galatasaray’s shortlist as they explore alternative midfield options.

The Japan international has impressed with his defensive discipline, work rate and composure in possession, traits which have caught the attention of the Champions League regulars. However, the report makes clear that, at this stage, no formal approach has been made to Leeds and no offer is currently being prepared.

Given Leeds’ current situation and their fight to establish themselves in the Premier League, a January exit for Tanaka appears highly unlikely. The midfielder remains an important part of Daniel Farke’s squad and is under contract until 2028.

Tanaka joined Leeds from Fortuna Düsseldorf in 2024 and played a crucial role in their Championship-winning campaign, making 45 appearances as the club secured promotion.

This season, he has continued to grow at the top level, featuring 19 times across all competitions and contributing three goals. With his influence increasing and Leeds needing stability in midfield, any potential move would seem far more realistic in the summer rather than during the current window.

For now, Galatasaray’s interest looks more like an expression of admiration than an imminent transfer.

Leeds are expected to resist any approaches for Tanaka during the window, with the midfielder central to their Premier League campaign. Galatasaray may revisit their interest later in the year if they fail to strengthen before the deadline.
