Leeds United have quietly positioned themselves for a late move for Mohamed Amoura, but conflicting signals from Germany have injected uncertainty — and a degree of chaos — into any potential deadline deal.

The Algeria international has emerged as a fresh target for Daniel Farke’s side in the closing days of the winter window, although expectations of a swift breakthrough remain low.

Leeds interest described as “ongoing”

Journalist Nabil Djellit reported on Friday that Leeds have been tracking VfL Wolfsburg forward Mohamed Amoura for some time, describing the situation as an “ongoing matter”.

However, the same update suggested Leeds have “very little” chance of completing a move before Monday’s deadline. No specific explanation was offered, but timing, cost and Wolfsburg’s stance all appear to be limiting factors.

Amoura, 25, previously played for Brighton and Hove Albion and has remained on the radar of Premier League clubs, including Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer. Wolves are no longer involved, leaving Leeds as the only English side currently linked.

Wolfsburg omission fuels speculation

The situation escalated on Friday night when Wolfsburg were beaten 1-0 by 1. FC Köln, with Amoura left out of the matchday squad entirely.

German outlet Sport1 reported the omission was for disciplinary reasons, a claim later backed up by Wolfsburg head coach Daniel Bauer.

“We’ve already made it public. The team comes first,” Bauer said. “Mohamed hasn’t fully embraced that this week. That’s why we have to be consistent.”

Bauer added that the issue would be handled internally and insisted Amoura would return to full training on Monday, suggesting no immediate rupture between player and club.

What it means for Leeds’ chances

While Amoura’s omission inevitably fuels transfer speculation, Wolfsburg’s stance appears firm. Publicly at least, there is no indication they are preparing to cash in days before the deadline.

For Leeds, the timing is awkward. Farke currently has Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Lukas Nmecha and Joël Piroe as central attacking options. Piroe is yet to score this season and has been linked with a possible exit, which could explain Leeds’ continued monitoring of attacking reinforcements.

However, with little time remaining and Wolfsburg keen to draw a line under the disciplinary issue, Leeds’ room for manoeuvre looks limited.

Late chaos, familiar outcome?

As the window enters its final stretch, this is shaping up as one of those situations where interest exists, conversations have happened — but a deal may simply come too late.

Unless Wolfsburg’s position shifts dramatically, Leeds may be forced to park their interest until the summer.

What’s Next

Leeds are expected to continue monitoring Amoura’s situation through deadline day, but a winter move appears unlikely without a sudden change in Wolfsburg’s stance. Any failure to add a forward now could increase pressure to act early in the summer window.

Should Leeds gamble on a late move for Amoura — or is waiting until the summer the smarter play?
